The subject line of this email ... "You reading this, be ready" is the title of a William Stafford poem (see below). It came into my heart as I prepared this email. it seems to resonate for me with the paradox of summer. On the one hand, many of us want a sense of spaciousness during these months. On the other hand, we can have the propensity to fill our days with ... with what? Often a continuation of planning and doing and getting.

Perhaps it's time to stop and pause. Perhaps the course I'll be offering the end of August can serve as a reminder that what is here, now, right here, is enough. Here's the poem:

Starting here, what do you want to remember?

How sunlight creeps along a shining floor?

What scent of old wood hovers, what softened

sound from outside fills the air?

Will you ever bring a better gift for the world

than the breathing respect that you carry

wherever you go right now?

Are you waiting for time to show you some better thoughts?

When you turn around, starting here, lift this

new glimpse that you found; carry into evening

all that you want from this day. This interval you spent

reading or hearing this, keep it for life—

What can anyone give you greater than now,

starting here, right in this room, when you turn around?
