"Today, the spirits of kimono makers past must be happy when they see their art still being worn. When you wear a kimono, honor the silkworms whose cocoons create that elegant flow; the flowers, rocks and plants that created the colors; the dyers who stood in chilly rivers rinsing to get just the perfect shade; the seamstress whose hands stitched it together; the people who owned the kimono before and whose lives are now woven in the fabric." - Brenda Wong Aoki

Last week, esteemed artist Brenda Wong Aoki shared her history, experiences with and connection to kimonos in the San Francisco Chronicle. CAAM has worked with Brenda Wong Aoki for many decades, and most recently with her work Aunt Lily’s Flower Book: 100 Years of Legalized Racism, which premiered at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco in May 2018 as CAAMFest’s Closing Night program.
