"NEXT TO NORMAL" - props & painting but mostly props

Hi All,
For the last few weeks I've been working on theater props and a bit of set painting for the YMTC production of "Next to Normal" which opens Friday night at the El Cerrito Performing Arts Theater on the campus of ECHS. This production is different and special. It features a professional cast including YMTC Production Artistic Director Jennifer Boesing and YMTC alumni Celeste Kamiya and David Crane. Next to Normal is a musical that deals with mental illness and the effects it can have on the relationships of those we love most.

The props, get to the props!

Some of the interesting props that I had to gather or make for this show included:
* a "large-ass" bong
* a birthday cake
* An ECT machine (electro-shock therapy)
* sandwich fixings
* dinner rolls
* a gurney
* an IV stand and pouch
. . . miscellaneous chairs (and table), personal effects for each character and lots and lots of pill bottles!!

Chris & Angrette work on the set, final version of cake

The set was designed by Angrette McCloskey and built by Chris Kristant. Angrette's set is GORGEOUS! Really it's like a very large painting. It's very Rothko-like. I help a bit with painting but it was mostly Angrette.

It's pretty amazing that we have theater of this calibre in our own backyard! No need to schlep into SF and deal with parking, the homeless problem and filthy streets. Support the arts and come to the El Cerrito Center for Performing Arts for a FUN NIGHT OUT!!

Hope to see you there!
Dawn
