AFGHANISTAN

Taliban closes university access to women

The Taliban have announced the closure of universities for women in Afghanistan, according to a letter by the higher education minister. The minister says the move is until further notice. It is expected to take effect immediately. To read more, click here.

Afghan father moves his children to Pakistan for education

Mohammad Asif Shakuri and his family moved to Balochistan Province in Pakistan from the city of Kandahar in Afghanistan after his eldest daughters were shut out of university. The Taliban in Afghanistan has banned women from attending university and suspended secondary education for girls since retaking power in 2021. To watch the video, click here.

FINLAND

Finland ponders tuition fees

Finland could introduce university tuition fees if a proposal by the Finance Ministry gains support. At present Finnish university courses are free of charge to students from Finland, the European Union and the European Economic Area, with tuition fees for some courses for students from elsewhere. IRAN (Islamic Republic of)

2 CSULB professors, who are brothers, provide virtual health care to Iranian protesters

On social media platforms, Iranians in the diaspora have been tirelessly sharing updates on the protests taking place in Iran and the brutal treatment of the protesters at the hands of the government. Many injured avoid being taken to the hospital in fear of being apprehended by the authorities and taken to prison. The Alaei brothers, both professors at California State University Long beach, have created a coalition of medical professionals called the Medical Alliance for Health Services Abroad, or MAHSA – in honor of Mahsa (Jina) Amini. The coalition has more than 120 active members, offering free telemedicine services at least 16 hours a day to help manage the time differences between Iran and other parts of the world. NORWAY

Public hearing shows poor support for non-EU tuition fees

The majority of Norway’s universities have rejected the proposal to introduce tuition fees for students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland (so-called third countries) in comments submitted during a public consultation process or hearing, which closed on 7 December. Appeal hearing in fake degrees case resumes after hiatus

After a delay of over four years, Islamabad High Court on 16 November resumed the hearing of an appeal by Shoaib Ahmed Shaikh, CEO of Axact, against a 2018 conviction for fraud and forgery involving the selling of fake degrees of non-existent universities to thousands of people worldwide. Compulsory Russian statehood courses for all undergrads

Russia is launching a compulsory patriotic course for all undergraduate students and is set to reform higher education humanities provision. The reforms are a response to the ever-growing isolation of the country in the international arena since the start of the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine. To read more, click here.

How recruiters in India use false promises to lure students to Canada
A TV documentary broadcast by The Fifth Estate in Canada has put the relationship between private and public colleges under scrutiny after over-recruitment of international students at one private college (recruiting for a community college) led to a temporary obstruction of access to the college for students.
