ACPTA Make It Matter Meet-up: March 2, 2020 – Supporting Families Served by Special Education and 504 in AISD (Attend in person, or by computer/phone.)

Date: Monday, March 2, 2020
Location: Carver Library, 1161 Angelina St., Austin 78702
Time: 12pm – 1:30pm

The ACPTS in partnership with the AISD Parent Engagement Support office is offering a learning opportunity for parents and families in Austin ISD schools. This session will provide an introduction to special education and 504 plans provided to children in our schools. We’ll discuss evaluations and qualifying diagnosis, services, supports, and disability rights law. We’ll also review the current state of special education in Austin ISD. We’ll conclude by discussing resources, advocacy groups including VELA and CSEE, and possible roles the PTA can play in supporting children with disabilities and their families. The session will be led by Ms. Maria P. Hernandez, Founder and Executive Director of VELA, Ms. Deborah Trejo, member of CSEE and AISD parent of 3 children served by special education and 1 child on a 504 plan; and Mr. Jon Lees, member of CSEE and AISD parent of a children server by special education.

Six Flags Read to Succeed Reading Program

The Six Flags Reading Program is under way! Your Kindergarten through 5th grade student can earn a free ticket to Six Flags Fiesta Texas by reading at least 6 hours. New this year - all reading logs can be submitted online by the parent/guardian!

Register your child at sixflags.com/books and use the school's code 85RU5. Your teacher's name is MILO MOUNTAIN LION. All reading hours must be logged online by April 15th!

It’s that time of year again…all the kids have what I like to call the “perma-cough” and the “perma-snot.”

As a parent of young kids, I know how hard it can be when your child wakes up not feeling great but you’ve already missed too much work. Here are some tips to help make that “should I send them to school?” decision.
