"But if we act as communities, it might just be enough, just in time"

Come on by on Thursday October 13th at 9am..

networking

Join us at the Greenhouse, the Good Work Institute building at 65 James Street in Kingston. Come and join a conversation about what kind of community we want to build, and how do we build it? The Transition movement is local but is based in global citizenship, so, what kind of a community do we want to build?
There is no formal agenda at our meetings, we encourage you to bring your ideas and share them with your neighbors.
See the article below about our conversation last month. Please contact Marie directly if you are interested in helping eliminate single use plastics in Kingston. Their tiffin take out is a great idea...

Acting Against Single Use Plastics in Kingston

Single-use plastic is a triple threat. It impacts human health, the environment, and the climate crisis, all at massive scales. The fossil fuel industry intends to increase plastic production by 300% by 2050. We have to act now to control production and reduce single-use plastic at the household and community levels.

Citizens Concerned About Plastic Pollution (CCAPP) is a local self-organized group that works to raise awareness about the dangers of single-use plastic and what we can do about it. We are active in Woodstock, Saugerties, and Hurley, and we are excited to be expanding into Kingston.

CCAPP is undertaking several actions:
* We are tabling at farmers markets and other venues and giving presentations to community groups..
* We are promoting the Tiffin Takeout Project, an initiative to get restaurants to encourage customers to bring their own reusable containers for takeout orders. (This was successfully piloted by Climate Action in New Paltz.)
* We are petitioning food markets to reduce plastic packaging and provide alternatives to products packaged in plastic.
* We are working with Ulster County officials to raise awareness and improve implementation of the Skip the Straw Law already on the books.

We’re formally affiliated with Beyond Plastics, well-known activist Judith Enck’s organization with national scope that focuses on legislation and other actions.

We hope that our new member and Kingston volunteer Marie Miller will be joined by other Kingston residents who want to get involved in these and other initiatives to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastic packaging. Grassroots efforts are very effective in campaigns like this. Please let us know by emailing info@ccapp.earth for more information on how you can make a difference and Marie will contact you.

UCAT's free fares

Early figures show that UCAT ridership is up following the introduction of free fares across the county at the beginning of October. UCAT claims to have a goal of ensuring safe, equitable services for all, with a clear focus on social, economic and environmental factors and a sustainable approach to public transportation. Transportation is a major factor in creating equity in community. Ulster County is rural, which makes it a challenging environment for public transportation even without the current labor shortage. On the sustainability side, UCAT has a fleet of electric vehicles and provides free wifi - mainly paid for through grants, not through the local taxpayer. They have relied heavily on federal and state funding for their operations, but the loss of fare revenue will be made up by the county. For more information and routes click here
