2018 Autumn eNews red

Hi Member,

Has the world gone mad?

This week a friend sent me a text with a photo of an adorable puppy. I knew she'd been thinking about a friend for her 9-year-old poodle/maltese cross, and this one did look gorgeous. And then she told me the price.....

$2,500 for a mixed breed puppy?

What the....??? Clearly, I must be behind the times if this is the price people are willing to pay for a poodle cross. She didn't buy it by the way, but I'm assuming someone will!

Ok - rant over, now back to business...this week's eNews is a bit different from usual. It's focusing on new 'stuff' I came across during the week including the launch of a new campaign focusing on mental health and support within the veterinary industry and supported by Royal Canin. The Love Your Pet Love Your Vet campaign has some great aims and offers a range of resources for both those who work in the veterinary industry and the general community.

I also came across the Australian Veterinary Palliative Care Advisory Council that was launched in 2017. The AVPCAC aims to develop and support best end-of-life practices and also endeavours to openly encourage conversations about death and bereavement within the veterinary and animal health field. This year they are also holding their first conference in Brisbane in May - you can find out more below.

Another first this week was the first ever review left on the Vetanswers Facebook Page. It's looking a bit lonely all by itself, so if you've got a spare moment could you add a review too?

You'll also find the 'Daily Top Tips' for the week and links to all the other resources and blog posts I came across during the week.

Our aim is to help you - save time, connect & discover!

Enjoy your reading :)

Facebook reviews

Rate the Vetanswers Facebook Page

An interesting thing happened during the week. Ok - maybe it was only interesting to me, but after five or so years the Vetanswers Facebook Page received its first ever Review!

Ellen felt that Vetanswers 'has some interesting topics and solutions seem viable' and awarded us 3 stars.

I've never actively sought reviews on Facebook but now we have one it looks a little lonely by itself. So I wondered if you have a moment to add a review to our Facebook Page?

I'm not asking for only 5-star reviews (although of course, they're lovely!) - I'm asking for whatever rating and review you feel is fair. Every rating is an opportunity for me to respond and will help to make Ellen's review look a little less lonely.

If you've got a moment, just click here to go to the Vetanswers Facebook Page and leave us a review. Thank you!

Australian Veterinary Palliative Care Advisory Council

I would have done anything to help make my old girl Isabel's life more comfortable during her final years. She lived to nearly 19 years of age and although we were very lucky to have her in our family for so long, there were still difficult decisions I had to make at the end. And I know all too well that not every pet has such a long life and often tough decisions have to be made in very different circumstances.

So I was interested to find out about the Australian Veterinary Palliative Care Advisory Council.**

The AVPCAC was established in 2017 and aims to develop and support best end-of-life care practices. It also aims to encourage cross discipline interaction between vets and allied health practitioners to improve patient outcomes. And importantly, they are also endevouring to openly encourage conversations about death and bereavement within the veterinary and animal health field.

The other really exciting thing is that they are also holding their very first conference in Brisbane on Saturday 19 May.

You can find out more about The Australian Veterinary Palliative Care Conference: Fostering Excellence in Palliative Medicine by clicking here.

As a pet owner I really want my vet to provide me with information and support throughout all stages of my pet's life. I know most veterinary practices offer puppy pre-school and puppy/kitten packs, etc. but what do you offer your clients for their senior pet for example?

There are so many opportunites for you to be there supporting owners and their pets through the good and not so good times, and throughout all stages of a pet's life. The AVPCAC is an excellent resource and source of practical advice.

You can find out more on the AVPCAC website here.

Royal Canin has put their support behind the campaign that aims to raise awareness within the general community of the factors that contribute to the alarming rate of burnout and suicide in the veterinary industry, as well as reduce the stigma in seeking help.

Post that stood out this week.... Are you a positive person in your workplace?

What makes a positive employee in the workplace? (HRM)

By Tim Baker

"The attitude necessary for possessing positive energy is being grateful to be part of the team and appreciating the efforts of others. This energy comes from having a general enthusiasm about the work that needs to be done. It’s enjoyable working alongside someone who possesses positive energy."

So what are the dimensions of positive attitude?

1. Being solution-focused
The preparedness to consider alternative solutions to problems. It means you ask yourself "How can this problem be resolved?"

2. Taking responsibility
Taking on tasks willingly without being asked to do so. It involves self-reliance and initiative.

3. Positive energy
Engaging with others in your team with an optimistic frame-of-mind and contributing in a constructive manner. It means you're cheerful, respectful and polite.

Why should you bother?

Having a positive attitude can make your work life (and that of others) much easier and as most of us spend at least a third of our lives at work, surely it makes sense to try and make it as pleasurable as possible?
