This May marks the 50th anniversary of Deep Purple's hit single, "Smoke on the Water."
Just to clarify, "Smoke in the Water" was first released in 1972 on the Deep Purple's "Machine Head" album, but it would be a whole year later when that now iconic, central guitar riff helped propel the track to new Billboard heights. And chances are if you've picked up a guitar anytime from 1973 to today, you've attempted to learn some variation of that riff.
DID YOU KNOW?:
Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore has said that his riff is an inversion of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Do you hear the connection? Listen to "Smoke on the Water" on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and more.
