Partnership Announcement

AnimalConcepts is excited to announce a new partnership with Dr. Sarah and Julian Chapman of Chapman Zoo Consultancy. The Chapmans founded Chapman Zoo Consultancy in January 2017 to provide animal caregivers continuing education in the field after they have graduated and entered the workforce, ensuring animal care professionals stay up to date on the latest science and research. They have worked around the world to promote good welfare through providing assistance and support to zoos, colleges, farm parks and private owners; delivering bespoke continuing professional development (CPD) to zoo and veterinary professionals and teaching best practices.

We will partner together on a wide variety of projects, including capacity building, animal welfare visits and assessments, research, writing and events.

“Play and the Evolution of Creative Societies”

Erice, Sicily, Italy

June 08-12, 2020

A workshop about play and creativity is being organised by Gordon Burghardt (University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA), Elisabetta Palagi (Università di Pisa, Italia), Sergio Pellis (University of Lethbidge, Canada), and Jeffry Schank (University of California, Davis, USA). The event will take place in Italy this summer and cover topics including the history and play research, neurobiology of play, brain evolution and play, play and welfare, clinical approach to play, play and evolution of complex communication, anthropology of play, and novel approaches to the study of play: modelling.

You can read the full workshop description below:

“Despite Plato realizing the importance of play over two thousand years ago, major advances of its understanding has only emerged in the last few decades. The overall purpose of the workshop is to explore how play improves the adaptability of brain and behaviour and how it can produce cultural and evolutionary variability. Talks by internationally renowned scientists will explore the many different approaches that have deepened our understanding of this enigmatic behaviour. This will include cross-species comparisons, phylogenetic and mathematical modelling, developmental changes and clinical and psychological approaches. Come and play with us!”

3rd Research Training Workshop: Animal Welfare and Evidence-Based Approaches

Registration is open for the 3rd Research Training Workshop: Animal Welfare and Evidence-Based Approaches!

April 24th - 25th 2020

Organised in collaboration with and hosted by University of Southern Denmark.

Limited to 35 participants.

Promoting optimal animal welfare is one of the goals of professional organisations housing wild and domesticated animals of a variety taxa, whether housed in zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, research facilities or other. To understand the welfare of animals, we need to use a cross-disciplinary and mixed methods approach in order to try to gain insights in the physiological and psychological welfare, ranging from negative to positive. Some research can be done by observation or by collecting samples, such as hair or faeces.

To answer other questions, we might need the cooperation of the animals for them to participate in their care, such as weighing, receiving medicine, blood and breath samples, as well as solving cognitive and physiological challenges posed to them. To be able to collaborate with animals through good human-animal relationships, two-way communication and positive reinforcement are at the core of developing research training programs. This 3rd research training workshop will focus on animal welfare and evidence-based approaches, training that promotes positive welfare while gaining insight into a wide variety of animal welfare related topics.

The workshop will also focus on the importance of translating what we know through science into practices and opportunities for animals, and the need for short- and long-term monitoring and evaluation of animal welfare.
