Safari Sightings
Nothing is as exciting as new life on the reserve, and some are just the lucky one's to be there, right time right place. Welcome to our reserve, little lion cubs! We hope you and your brothers and sisters have a great time watching tourists from all over the world. |

During our dry months the little water hole in front of the Makutsi River Lapa becomes a real wildlife hotspot. Almost every day something special happens here, from lions passing to elephants drinking, and everything in between.
On this day, the hippo was sitting in his little jacuzzi when an elephant decided to come for a drink (not successful :) and the lion cubs were watching from the other side!

Lodge Updates
2 Bedroom 2 Bathroom Family Rondavel
In 2014 we built a new family room which consisted of 2 bedrooms, both with private en-suite, and a living space in the middle. This room is perfect for the large family or for 2 couples wanting to travel together and share. Because of its popularity and versatility, we are happy to announce that we are in the process of building a 2nd rondavel like this one, which should be ready for use by the end of 2016. |
New Garage
In the last few months we have also invested in expanding our shed for the vehicles. Not only are the Land Rovers snugly under a new roof, but now all the buses and small cars will be protected from the wet & hot summer months. |
Safari Shop
If you forgot something to wear or you are searching for that new Safari outfit, it is more than possible that you will find it in the Makutsi Safari Shop. There is an array of women’s, men’s and even children’s and new born baby clothing to choose from. From short sleeve cotton shirts, to long sleeve button up shirts, jumpers, vests, shorts & long pants. Then the accessories to accompany the outfit such as scarves, beanies, hats, jewellery and so much more.
We also offer hand made jewellery and curios to suit every budget. There are antique masks, animal skins, candle holders, wooden giraffe's, wooden bowls, gem stone and silver jewellery, books, postcards even a small supply of toiletries (for those who forgot to pack theirs). |
South African Cuisine
The Makutsi dining experience is unique in the way that we offer all guests one 3-course meal every night. The food is varied, from your traditional roast, spaghetti, lasagne but also includes some South African favourites such as Bobotie, Poitjie, Malva pudding and Braai with Pap. |
The word Braai is Afrikaans for barbecue or outdoor grill. Boerewors, steak and local game can be on the menu during your stay. The other main part of the meal is mielie pap. Pap is a traditional porridge made from finely ground white corn/maize (similar to polenta), and is a staple of local African communities. |
Potjiekos, literally translated "small pot food", is a stew prepared outdoors over a fire. It is traditionally cooked in a round, cast iron, three-legged pot. Traditionally, the recipe includes meat, vegetables like carrots, cabbage, cauliflower or pumpkin, starches like rice or potatoes, all slow-cooked with Dutch-Malay spices. |
Of the many dishes common to South Africa, Bobotie is perhaps closest to being the national dish, because it isn't made in any other country. Spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping served with yellow rice and raisins, sliced banana, chutney and coconut. |
For those with a sweet tooth you can look forward to the classic Melk Tart, a sweet pastry crust containing a creamy filling made from milk, flour, sugar and eggs, witch cinnamon sprinkled over its surface. Or a Malva Pudding, usually served hot with custard or ice-cream. It is made with apricot jam and has a spongy caramelized texture. |
Thank you for being a part of our Newsletter, we hope you enjoyed the short update and wildlife photos. We would also like to wish all of you a wonderful festive season ahead, may you enjoy priceless moments with you family and friends. See you in the new year!! |
