Nevada Interscholastic Cycling League Suspension

***

Dear Coaches, Parents, and Student-Athletes:

Due to the threat from COVID-19 and under the guidance of the CDC, recommendations from the Governor, and following the actions of the Clark County School District (CCSD), the Nevada Interscholastic Cycling League (NICL) has made the decision to suspend all League and Team events for the 2020 season effective immediately. This decision is based on developments here in Nevada, the nature of our events, and guidance we are seeing from local communities and agencies.

As a community organization, NICA is making every effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Along with many other community organizations, the measures NICA leadership is putting in place are to protect our youth, communities, slow the spread of coronavirus, and reduce overall burden on hospitals and other health organizations. Collectively, we are seeking to lower and delay the epidemic peak as seen in the below chart.

The NICL response to this guidance is that we are suspending all NICL activities including team practice and league events until further notice. This suspension effectively means your child’s team is entering the NICA off-season until the assessed situation changes. We will continue to monitor the situation and restart your regular season as soon as the coronavirus threat in our community has receded.

What's Happening Now?

▪ The Pit Zone has been temporarily closed. Once the CCSD lifts its ban on school activities, it will reopen and resume as normal.
▪ The NICL has postponed (not cancelled) "The Spicer Ranch Roundup" and will extend our season to reschedule it after "The Sawmill Challenge".
▪ "The Caliente Crusher" is still scheduled for April 18th and will continue unless the CCSD has not lifted its ban on school activities, in which case we will either reschedule or cancel it.

Here is what a suspension of the season (same as off-season) means:

▪ We encourage your child and family to keep riding, but under the supervision of each child’s parents and/or guardians
▪ We do have safety tips below for riding outside of NICA (below)
▪ NICA Insurance is NOT in effect
▪ NICA Policies limiting 1:1 interaction between Student-Athletes and Coaches are year-round.

Tips for NICA Student Athletes During the Season Suspension:

Throughout the season you’ve learned a lot about riding with a style of respect from your team. Riding with respect and managing your safety over the off-season is an excellent way to continue your growth as a Mountain Biker and Student-Athlete. We’ve shared the following tips to help you on your journey outside of the NICA Program:

General

▪ Always let people know your ride plan and get permission from your parents including: When, where, and plan if you don’t return on time
▪ Ride with Respect
▪ Do what your coach taught you
▪ Ride with proper equipment
▪ Ride with a friend
▪ Ride within your ability
▪ Be a strong ambassador for NICA and the broader Mountain Bike Community by riding trails legal for bikes

I appreciate your patience as we work through this challenge. I consider this a minor setback, and as a league will continue to work on creating the best possible experience for our student-athletes.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at dennis@nevadamtb.org.

Best Regards,
Dennis
