Memorial Day started on April 25, 1866, when women in Columbus, Mississippi laid flowers on the graves of both the Union and Confederate dead in the city's cemetery.
Union and Confederate memorial traditions merged, to honor all Americans who died while in the military service creating our united national Memorial Day.
