Have you ever received a compliment that you totally did not expect? Do you remember how it made you feel?
An unexpected word of praise from someone is a gift that has no monetary value; it's truly precious. Being able to give a compliment is more of a skill than you might think.
When you are interacting with someone, it's natural to note something they possess or do that you admire, but putting that into words can be hard. The reasons for this are varied; shyness, jealousy or not knowing how to articulate what you admire are just a few.
If giving compliments is not something that comes naturally, then start with snippets of things you notice that are easy to comment on.
1 – Thank the cashier at the grocery store not just with a thank you: “Thanks for checking me out so quickly with a smile. I bet it's hard to do that all day long, but you made me feel very welcomed.”
2 – Thank a customer that you really appreciate them: “I want to thank you for being a great customer. Your positive support of my business means the world to me and my family, and I love hearing from you!”
3 – Thank your children or spouse for doing a menial task: “Thank you for taking out the garbage without being asked. It really shows that you are paying attention. You're a really great helper in our house.”
Are you starting to see some places in your own life that you could use the power of a compliment to empower others and yourself?
