The Maya family’s New Year’s resolution: To have fun on their running journey together as a family! Kerri and her children Austin (19), Ean (17), Emera (12), and Alura (3) are on this running adventure together, but they credit Austin with inspiring them to even begin.
Austin is an inspiration to many, a young man who, at only 19, has single-handedly organized and completed a 24-hour fundraising event kayaking across and hiking around Lake Sonoma that raised several thousands of dollars for a scleroderma research fund. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disorder that Austin faces himself, and his own struggles have motivated him to run to raise money and awareness for several causes, including Parkinson’s research and the American Heart Association. Austin was the solo runner in the family until he challenged Kerri to run her first marathon in support of her father who is debilitated by Parkinson’s. Though the thought of it sounded “utterly awful,” Kerri took the challenge. Soon Emera was running with the two of them, and it was HRC’s Turkey Trot last fall that finally got Ean to lace up his running shoes. Now, the whole family (with the exception of their mini-cheerleader, Alura) is registered to run the Honolulu Marathon in December, and we hope they will be wearing HRC gear as we cheer them on from across the miles!
