The Meaning of Sin

By Lance Mosher

The more I go out into the community, the more I realise that the world has really lost its understanding of sin. What is sin? The Greek word for sin (ἁμαρτία) is commonly defined as missing the mark. Our aim is to do as God has commanded, but when we fail to do so, we simply miss the mark (target). To sin is to break God’s law.

1 John 3:4: Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.

Our culture does not like the word sin, because of the unavoidable connotation of judgment that comes with it. However, it’s a subject that God deals with openly. Sin itself will sever the relationship we have with Him (Isaiah 59:1-2; Romans 6:23). Because of that, Christ, the sinless One, had to die for our sins in order to redeem us, in order to bring our relationship with God back together (Romans 5:6-10; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Many people don’t want to call lying a sin, since it’s usually not a “big deal.” At least, it’s nothing like theft, rape, or murder…right? Let’s go back to the Garden. Adam (and indirectly, Eve) was told not to eat from a certain tree (Genesis 2:16-17). However, both Adam and Eve ate of it (Genesis 3:1-7), thus, sinning against the Lord. Then, God had to show them that He was serious about sin, and He punished them (Genesis 3:8-24). Did Adam rape anyone? Did Eve kill anyone? No, they simply ate fruit. Yet, that was enough to destroy their relationship with God.

The next time you or I try to justify telling a “white lie” or turn a “blind eye” to what is right (James 4:17), we need to remember that God cares for our souls, and it breaks His heart when we give His Son another reason to die on the cross.

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Seek the eternal life and forgiveness of sins today, which can only be found in Christ Jesus (Colossians 1:13-14; Galatians 3:26-27).
