A while ago I wrote a series of bit sized emails entitled "Double Your Sales" with a dollop of AW philosophy and more than a few radical ideas about the gift trade thrown in for good measure.
After reading the five emails lots of folk email with thoughts and further ideas. Which I'm planning to share with you at some point.

Double your sales

Hello and welcome first of all I'd like to offer a very personal thank you for joining us at Ancient Wisdom on this short series on how to double your sales in the gift trade. Actually double is rather setting the horizon too low, especially since I don’t know where your starting point is. First a little about me.

My name is David and I'm the founder and I suppose the boss of Ancient Wisdom. I love the gift trade, because it is about bringing beautiful, interesting, sensual things to people. It's a great business because people always need a little something to make life a little sweeter. Giving a gift is an “Act of Love”. Vitally important to the human race. We will explore later why..

Before Ancient Wisdom in my younger days I was a retailer, born into a market trading family. My university was Castle Market in Sheffield, hyper competitive in the 1980’s. My teachers were fellow traders - mostly mavericks with fat cigars and jags who know how to put on a “flash”, how to chat up the customers and charm open those tight Yorkshire purses. I was effectively an early student of “behavioural economics” - why people do stuff, including why they buy things. So you see retail is in my DNA.

I used what I learned to start a retail business which quickly went mainstream with over a hundred high street shops within four years, not too bad for 28 year old. I sold out and of course blew my “fortune” pretty quickly because of a combination of Black Monday, a divorce and amazing arrogance (yes I was). I probably learned much more about life and business (and humility) in the time spent broken and penniless in the mid 90’s. But that’s another story.

Later I founded Ancient Wisdom and the rest is history..
