Governor Signs State Auditor's Budget; Does NOT Line-Item Veto Legislative Power Grab

May 2nd, 2019

Despite many calls for him to do so by people all across the political spectrum, it appears that the legislative power grab forcing the State Auditor to get permission from a legislative committee in order to do his job of conducting performance audits.

According to a press release from the Governor's office the governor signed all remaining bills and only using his line-item veto power on a section of the OMB Budget related to the Legacy Fund.

This is an unfortunate development as now more than ever the need for pro-active comprehensive performance auditing is needed at all levels of government.

The auditor's office is the one government agency that should have more money and more staff to protect all the other taxpayer dollars being spent.

We will keep you updated on this story if it changes.

Legislature Puts Itself In Charge Of The Auditor's Office

Bill removes state auditor's independent authority to do the job voters elected him to do

April 25th, 2019

In yet another power grab by the 2019 legislative session, the House today has approved language in the State Auditor's budget that would essentially make him an employee of the "Legislative Audit and Review Committee" and remove what little independent authority the auditor has under the state constitution.

Earlier today, State Representative Rick Becker issued a video statement regarding this action.

Apparently the legislature thinks the Auditor is doing his job too well as this bill received 72 vote in favor of it.

Representative Becker explains the situation best.
