As the weather cools and the nights become longer, we turn our attention to older patients who may start to struggle at this time of year

At Prahran Vet Hospital we have a well established Seniors Health Program for pets over eight years of age. Dr Diana Barker has taken the time to give us all an outline of the program's many benefits and some recent improvements on our blog this month. Take a look here.

Did you know that ninety percent of older cats suffer from the painful degenerative disease of joints called osteoarthritis? Cats are notoriously good at masking the true nature or their discomfort. So, if your cat is aged over eight we highly recommend you take the time to complete our Feline Mobility questionnaire.

If you have noticed Labrador pooches with a bit of a paunch, new research shows it may not be entirely the owner's fault.

Is your pet struggling to fit into its genes?

Researchers in the UK have identified a genetic cause for obesity in Labradors, a breed of dog unfortunately well known for being "food motivated".

This research may have important implications for research into human obesity as well as other species.

But before we let obese dogs off the hook altogether it's important to heed the words of the researcher who was quoted as saying:
"If owners are vigilant, it is possible to keep any dog skinny by carefully regulating diet and exercise."

If you'd like assistance in reducing your pet's weight, why not contact one of our nutritional advisers on 95101335.
