FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Las Vegas organization commemorates 400th anniversary of the first enslaved African brought to colonial America on September 27 (LAS VEGAS – August 30) Afrikfest Las Vegas a 3-day event planned for September 26 – 28, will kick off its second day with commemorating 400 years of African-American History on September 27 at the Las Vegas Conference Center. A dark part of history that shaped this country happened in Virginia in 1619; the first enslaved Africans who were brought to North American colonies. In 2017, the United States Congress passed the 400 years of African-American History Commission Act which is charged with developing activities throughout the country to commemorate the arrival of Africans in the English colonies in 1619, an event widely regarded as the commencement of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in North America. "As the only Commemorative event in the state of Nevada and with this challenging moment in history, this is an opportunity to come together and transform ourselves and our communities," said Chris Usigbe, Executive Director. "Especially with our growing community of Africans and African Americans, it was important for Afrikfest to commemorate this time in history." he continued. | Africans and African Americans in the diaspora, are working together to preserve, restore, and elevate ancestors' stories, which are vital to our growth and contribution to our community in the next 400 years. The afternoon will see the community coming together in synergy to reflect, establish integral and purposeful connections with each other within and across their sectors of interest and expertise. | The 400th commemorative ceremony, will feature an extraordinary lineup of performers, attendees will experience an evening of storytelling, an African ancestral parade, spiritual circle, healing ceremony, drums, and musical performances. Also, there will be a Diaspora Marketplace with vendors and exhibitors, and attendees will experience, authentic food, a fashion show in a festival and carnival type atmosphere. To cap off the evening, live entertainment produced by celebrity African recording artist, Yinka Rythmz and the Team Somebody Band, plus other musical artists will provide a combination of elements of West African musical styles with American funk and jazz influence. | Afrikfest is a FREE EVENT, and the entire community is invited to attend.
