What is a sampling rate any hoo?

Sometimes those of us in the professional audio or consumer electronics world forget just how confusing sampling rates are. Some of us are old enough to remember moving from tape to digital recording as far back as the early 80's.

Well, back then we only had two digital sampling rates to worry about 44.1 and 48. Little did we think we'd now be offering upwards of 15 different file formats for recording and listening to. (That doesn't include all the compressed audio -- mp3, AAC, etc).
