Health Information Professionals Week Shows Commitment to Health Data During 31st Annual Celebration

HIP Week Set for Oct. 11-17, 2020

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) will honor and celebrate health information professionals during the 31st annual Health Information Professionals (HIP) Week Oct. 11-17, 2020. This year’s theme is “Health Information Professionals: Connecting People, Systems & Ideas.”

The celebration will be held in conjunction with the AHIMA20 Virtual Conference. HIP Week was originally scheduled for March but was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“As our healthcare ecosystem continues to evolve, health information professionals remain committed to the principles of delivering the best inpatient care through the use of high-quality data that transforms health and healthcare,” said AHIMA CEO Wylecia Wiggs Harris, PhD, CAE. “The pandemic has shone a light on their contributions, and I can’t wait to acknowledge their efforts during HIP Week at AHIMA20.”

During HIP Week, health information professionals engage in focused activities in their organizations and the community to raise awareness of the important work they perform, while health systems often recognize the accomplishments of their health information team during HIP Week.

AHIMA has created the website HipWeek.org to tell the stories of health information professionals and their impact on the quality of patient care around the globe. The website recognizes these professionals and gives them a platform to share why they’re so passionate about health information; health information professionals can also download materials from a HIP Week toolkit to help them celebrate. And there’s a place for health information professionals to sign a pledge to support consumer engagement and patients’ rights, as AHIMA believes health service consumers are empowered when they are engaged with the knowledge and understanding of their health status and treatment.

Harris said she was pleased with the timing of HIP Week. “AHIMA20 is the place for health information professionals to access the education and resources they need, while engaging with their peers,” she said. “Celebrating HIP Week at AHIMA20 is a natural fit.”

Individuals who wish to recognize a health information professional can donate to the AHIMA Foundation in their honor and AHIMA will recognize them on social media during HIP week. Follow the hashtags #HIPWEEK20 and #AHIMA20 to see how organizations celebrate across the US.
