JAVA VILLAGE NEWSLETTER WINTER SPRING 2024

Dear readers and supporters of Java Village. We hope this Newsletter finds you well; 2024 is already well underway and hopefully this year will bring you happiness and good health. In the village all seems to go well. As you can read below our Sas and MPS students are making good progress. These programmes are very important and they need ongoing support, so we hope you don't mind our extra plea for support, below.

Coming May our chairperson Mies Grijns and our Indonesian fieldworker Titi Setiawati will be going to the village again. We're planning a new project to train primary school teachers to identify pupils who need extra support in their learning process (e.g. pupils with autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, poor eyesight, etc.). At the moment we're busy finding funds for this project.

There will be an extensive report on this visit, including some new photos of the village in our next Newsletter.

Please forward our Newsletter to friends who might be interested in Java Village. You can do this very easily by using the forward button at the bottom of this Newsletter. It will lead you to a page on which you can submit up to five email addresses.

Our SaS and MPS students

The ten new students sponsored by our Sponsor a Student programme, who started junior high school (SMP) last September, are making good progress. Their school results are very satisfactory. Our two new students, at the senior high school (SMA), sponsored by the Maria Peters Scholarship are also doing well. In total Java Village is now sponsoring thirty SaS students (divided over three classes) and five MPS students (divided over two classes) this year.

Please keep supporting us

We would like to stress here how important our SaS and MPS programmes are. It gives the opportunity for girls and boys to go to school, get a good school education and a solid base from which to make a good start in society. We know for sure that many of our former SaS students would not have been able to become for instance teachers, obtain good positions at a factory or continue their education, without the help of our SaS Programme. We've sadly noticed that the number of SaS sponsors has declined in the last year. So herewith an extra plea to keep supporting the programme; our SaS programme really makes a difference.

How to sponsor our Sponsor a Student programme

You can support a student by donating €12,50 per month or €150 per year. Please go to our website for additional information about how you can become a SaS sponsor.
This ongoing project supports young pupils so that they can continue their education after primary school. The village doesn't have a secondary school and many families can't afford the cost of going to a school outside the village. The Sponsor a Student project helps these families. Since the beginning of the project in 2008 Java Village has already helped 150 pupils go to a junior high school.

How to support the Maria Peters Scholarship

If you would like to support the Maria Peters Scholarship, please go to support on our website. The costs for senior high school or vocational school are higher than those for junior high school, because the government asks a school fee for the second phase of secondary school education. This means that the total costs for three years are €1650 (€550 per year) per pupil, compared to €450 for three years of junior high school (€150 per year, per pupil, as there is no school fee for junior high school.) Java Village has been supporting junior high school students for the last fifteen years through its Sponsor a Student (SaS) programme (see above). Understandably, senior high school is an even heavier financial burden, and support for these students is highly appreciated.

The Maria Peters Scholarship wants to give motivated students the chance to continue their school education after completing junior high school. It was founded in memory of Maria Peters, one of the first supporters of Java Village, who sadly passed away in 2016. In honour of her, her family took the initiative, together with Java Village, to establish this special grant for excellent students.
