Serve

Today we hear James warn against selfish ambition, while the disciples quarrel over which one of them is the greatest. Jesus tells them the way to be great is to serve. Then, to make it concrete, he puts in front of them an actual flesh-and-blood child. We are called to welcome the particular children God puts in front of us, to make room for them in daily interaction, and to give them a place of honor in the assembly.

September 23: “Faces of Incarceration” Have you ever met someone who spent time in prison? “Faces of Incarceration: Changing the Narrative” is the theme of the portrait exhibit on display at LELC through September. Six paintings are here from the original 50 that were shown at the Overture Center in July 2017. Brief stories give a glimpse into the portrait subjects’ road back to community. It is an invitation to see the larger picture of their journey. Pat Dillon curated the original exhibit and wrote the stories after interviewing the individuals in the paintings. The paintings were done by numerous Madison artists. Bring your questions and comments to the discussion with former jail chaplain John Mix, one of the artists, will speak, as will one of the featured portrait subjects.

Rides to Worship Needed

van with people

Are you able to give someone a ride on Sunday Mornings? There are a few parishioners and visitors who would like to join us at Sunday worship but do not have transport. We would like to develop a list of possible drivers and their preferred service area. Call the church office and speak to the front desk volunteer to sign up, or email Chris at communications@lelc.org.

Volunteers Needed!

kids multicultural

With the beginning of the school year on the horizon, our need for volunteers for children and youth ministry is growing! Are you able to help our youngest members grow in faith? We are looking for volunteers for the following:
- Sermon activity time leader (10:30 worship)
- Play time volunteers (9:15-9:30 on Sundays)
- Nursery assistants (10:30 worship)
- Chaperones for youth events & field trips
- Substitute teachers (9:30-10:20 on Sundays)
Help is also needed with behind-the-scenes work, such as periodically cleaning the toys that kids use, refreshing supplies in classrooms, etc.
If you are interested in helping with any of these volunteer opportunities, please be in touch with Pastor Katya (kouchakof@lelc.org), Sam Lee (youthministry@lelc.org) or Ann Ahearn (sundayschool@lelc.org). It takes a village to raise our children!

Walking the Bible: Book of Faith

book of faith

Thursdays, September 20-27; October 4 & 11

1:00 pm and 7:00 pm Each Day
The next Book of Faith Bible study will take us on a journey by land through the five books of Moses with a video that takes us from the birthplace of civilization (Mesopotamia) to Mt. Ararat to Harran to Egypt and then back to the Promised Land. It took the Israelites 40 years but we will do it in four sessions, led by Pastor Stephen.
When you read the Bible, have you ever wondered what the landscape looked like? How high are the mountains? What was the Dead Sea like when Lot’s wife looked back? Where is the Reed Sea that Moses crossed? Here is your opportunity to see what the land looks like from the comfort of our own adult learning room. Sign up on the bulletin board.
