Our CAAMFest40 Opening Night film Free Chol Soo Lee will be back in San Francisco for a limited engagement at the Roxie Theater, August 19-21. This week would have marked Lee’s 70th birthday, who was wrongfully imprisoned for a Chinatown murder during the 1970s. The documentary traces how these events sparked a pan-Asian movement. Three screenings at the Roxie Theater will be followed by live Q&As with directors Julie Ha and Eugene Yi.

Read more about this CAAM-funded documentary and slice of Bay Area history and Asian American activism in Momo Chang’s interview with the filmmakers.

_Historian’s Take:_ Why Kate Bush’ Viral Success from Stranger Things is Radical

Kate Bush’s 1985 song, “Running Up that Hill (A Deal With God),” has climbed to the top of music charts in 2022 and reached nearly 500 million streams. This song’s revival after 37 years is largely thanks to Season 4 of Stranger Things, where (spoiler alert) the song serves as a talisman for one of the characters to protect herself from the demons of an alternate universe. But our newest Historian's Take episode explains how this song’s overnight success reflects an unusual - and smart - deal for the musician. Watch this and all the videos in this CAAM-funded webseries on Youtube.
