Earlier this month the Liberal Government released a discussion paper regarding changes to how Canadian Parliament works.

Included in the paper are proposals to:

▪ Eliminate Friday sessions in the House of Commons
▪ Implement permanent limits on debate in the House of Commons and Standing Committees, and
▪ See Prime Minister Justin Trudeau only having to attend Question Period in the House of Commons one day each week (which means he would only be answering questions for an estimated one hour a week).

The ability of Members of Parliament to hold the Prime Minister and his Government to account for all Canadians is critical to the functioning of Canadian democracy.

The ability to debate differing opinions in the House of Commons is the basis of Canadian democracy; Limiting this debate in the House and in Committee would mean that some Members of Parliament would be prohibited from speaking on certain legislation and issues. Essentially this means that MPs would be limited in their ability to represent us, their constituents.

CROSS-PARTY UNANIMITY:

The opposition to these changes has been significant and has received cross-party unanimity. Every party except the Liberals believes that this is wrong.

The Conservative and NDP parties have been filibustering all this week in the PROC Committee (Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs) to try and fight the changes, but they need our help.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO DEFEND CANADIAN DEMOCRACY

1) PRAY:

Let us never forget nor underestimate the power we have to influence these types of initiatives through prayer. Please pray that our leaders would vote to maintain Parliamentary procedures which protect and enhance democracy not hinder it.

2) SIGN THE PETITION:

Please click here to sign the petition calling on the Government not to force any of these changes without the unanimous consent of all parties.

3) E-MAIL THE COMMITTEE:

Please e-mail the Liberal members of the PROC committee now and tell them that limiting debate would take away the right of MPs to represent their constituents and their ability to do their job. Any fundamental changes to our Canadian democracy would require unanimous support of all parties.
