HTA Bulletin [Week 2, November 2016]

This week we look at an interesting personality from recent Islamic history, the Sufi Mujahid Imam Shamil and explain the concept of the "Mujaddid" (reviver of the religion). We also present an article on the centrality of the Khilafah to Islam and a pertinent reminder for all, both from "Hujjat Al Islam" Imam Al Ghazali

We ask Allah to make this a beneficial instalment. Please do share the bulletin (you can share it as a standalone link here) with others and feel free to email us back with any feedback.

“Imam Shamil: The Mujahid and Sufi who resisted an Empire

When you think of a sufi order in this day and age, physical Jihad isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. But historically, and scripturally, Tasawwuf and Jihad aren’t worlds apart like one might imagine these days. There are few better recent examples to show this than in the life of Imam Shamil, a noble Sheikh from the Caucasus who lived in the 1800s. He was well-educated, spiritually devout, and would ultimately lead the Muslim fight against the Russians in the Caucasian War of the 1800s. This article looks briefly at his life and valiant resistance.

Explaining the “Mujaddid” – the Reviver of Islam sent each Century

The Mujaddid, or Reviver, is a concept known to us through the ahadith. He is an individual or even group of people, known by his/their efforts, who/m Allah sends every century to revive what is abandoned from the Quran and Sunnah. Unlike the Prophets عليهم السلام the Mujaddid is not infallible, and he can not come with anything new. Here we present a piece adapted from a detailed response of the Amir of Hizb ut Tahrir, Shaykh Ata ibn Khalil abu al Rashta, to one who asked him regarding the hadith of the mujaddid.

Imam al-Ghazali on the Caliphate and its centrality to Islam

Imam Al Ghazali is rightly revered as one of the great scholars of Islamic history. Some consider him the mujaddid (reviver) of his century on account of his revival of the Islamic sciences and major contributions to issues that had beset Islamic theology. The Imam was a prolific writer and his writings touched many subjects. Lesser known perhaps to Muslim communities in the West are his theories on governance and ruling. This article looks briefly at the Imam’s views on these important issues through some important extracts from his works.
