As the legalization of recreational marijuana in Canada approaches, there are a surplus of questions and concerns that come along with it. The question of how this will affect workplace drug testing is one question in particular that many workers are curious about.
At this point in time, there is still a lack of settled standards around how much cannabis is too much, and how to measure it. Stiffer penalties, as well as an accurate roadside test are extremely necessary before the legalization is safe. "Cannabis intoxication can't be measured the same way that alcohol can" - Jenna Valleriani
Unlike alcohol, it is much tougher to determine when individuals are impaired because it is so much more dependent on the individual in terms of how experienced they are, the strain that they are using, as well as how they are using it. This poses many risks because it will be easier for people to get away with being under the influence, considering there are no accurate testing mechanisms out there just yet.
"The legalization, commercialization and distribution of cannabis will increase the use among the workplace and, failing an aggressive intervention will result in more workplace injuries and fatalities" - Ontario General Contractors Association. The legalization of marijuana is concerning to many workplaces because now there is question about whether or not drug test failure is allowed to result in the loss of a job opportunity or termination from a current position.
