...Is truly giving Dads their due!

Our lives are full of fathers... Dads, granddads, sons, brothers, uncles, and even friends... And with Father's Day just around the corner, everywhere you look there are ads for "guy" gifts ranging from fishing poles to floor mats.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with presents, but I think there's an even better way to honor the impact that fathers have on our families and communities, and it starts by recognizing that a lot of what dads do is actually philanthropy! It’s not often thought about this way, but when there's a need in our community, our dads are often right there on the front lines donating time, expertise, and even funding.

Dad teaching the Dietlin kids to fish - It's still one of my favorite memories and pastimes!

So this year I'd like to challenge us all to take note of how the dads in our lives give to the nonprofit world, and look for opportunities to honor the things that matter most to them!

Does a dad in your life coach Little League? Support him by being a volunteer scorekeeper for a game! Does he care about a worthy cause? You could make a donation (or join with friends and family to make a joint donation) in his name. Is he a volunteer Fireman? Maybe go down and cook a meal for the firehouse one night. Is he a veteran? You could volunteer for a support organization in your community. Even simply showing up to join him as he cheers for his children at a recital is a way to show your support! The list of opportunities goes on and on….

Fathers are complicated. Their role in society is just as laden with stereotypes and expectations as mothers - and just like mothers, a lot of the extra efforts they make in our communities goes unnoticed.

So, I hope you'll join me this Father's Day in honoring the difference dads make by Making A Difference® yourself!

"Hey Lisa, what's 'Voluntouring'...?

I'm so glad you asked! Voluntouring is a terrific way to maximize your summer by vacationing somewhere with volunteer opportunities that align with your interests! There are countless ways to Voluntour, and I recently spoke with Business First AM about finding one that's right for you!
