2009

In August, the Savoy, home to Dance With Me, will be celebrating it's 6th year in business! We aren't planning a anniversary party this year, due to our event schedule. We still want to thank everybody who has helped and supported us over the last six years and that list is LONG! From mopping, cleaning, moving furniture to emotional and financial support! We couldn't have done it without you!

6 WEEK SERIES

SALSA
SAL102 - Beginning Salsa with Emma McNagny
Date: Wed 7/27/2016 - 8/31/2016
Time: 6:30 pm - 7:25 pm
Price: $65 - early bird discount: $52 if registered by 7/18
"Walk this way" This class will orient you to the basic, walking here, there, and everywhere; just dancing the rhythm and getting it into your feet. There will be a strong concentration on turns. Students in this class will dance more alone - very little partner work - so that you really get the dance in your bodies and feet.

WEST COAST SWING
WCS102 - Beginning West Coast Swing with Andrew Walls
Date: Thu 8/11/2016 - 9/15/2016
Time: 6:30 pm - 7:25 pm
Price: $65 - early bird discount: $52 if registered by 8/5
Smooth and stylish, West Coast Swing is danced to blues, R&B, funk, pop, and even country music, making it not only the most popular style of social dance across the nation, but the fastest growing. Learn West Coast Swing from two of the best and most accomplished swing dancers and teachers in the midwest, Anne and Andy Walls.

WCS102 introduces the footwork, timing, and lead/follow technique of the basic eight-count west coast swing patterns. The patterns we'll teach and use in this class are to develop good skills in distinguishing between 6 and 8 count patterns, which is an important fundamental skill for any west coast swing dancer, all while exploring variations popular on social dance floors around the world.

WCS102 has no pre-requisite dance knowledge or skill level and as a foundational class, it covers beginner to intermediate knowledge in west coast swing. We offer three separate foundation classes for west coast swing (WCS101, 102, and 103) and they may be taken in any order as they all cover foundational elements of west coast swing dancing and are all appropriate for beginning dancers to experienced dancers, but all three classes are required before any intermediate classes should be taken.

Because of the nature of the 100 level west coast swing classes, dancers of all levels are encouraged to not only take all the foundation classes, but we also encourage repeat attendance of the classes as each time you will gain more understanding and skill in the fundamentals of west coast swing, plus the patterns we cover in any single class will vary each time you take the class as our goal is to teach the fundamental elements of the dance, which are accomplished through a variety of patterns.

WEST COAST SWING
WCS203 - Intermediate West Coast Swing with Andrew Walls
Date: Thu 8/11/2016 - 9/15/2016
Time: 7:30 pm - 8:25 pm
Price: $65 - early bird discount: $52 if registered by 8/5

Spin patterns galore! This class series will explore west coast swing patterns with both leader and follower spins. We'll focus on refining pivot technique, plus we'll discuss shaping and spotting for refining your spinning technique and styling.

A great chance to hone your ability to lead and follow west coast swing plus look at concepts that build beyond your basics! This class requires the completion of WCS101, WCS102, and WCS103. Evaluation can be scheduled to determine eligibility.

Cost is only $65 per person for all 6 weeks of any of our series. Plus, if you register at least one week in advance, you'll save 20% and only pay $52!!

All Classes: No partner required, singles, couples and LGBT friendly!

Babies Are Born to Dance

Babies move in time to music even before they learn to speak, new research shows. Credit: Dreamstime

By Live Science Staff | March 15, 20106

"Our research suggests that it is the beat rather than other features of the music, such as the melody, that produces the response in infants," said researcher Marcel Zentner, a psychologist at the University of York in England. "We also found that the better the children were able to synchronize their movements with the music, the more they smiled."

To test babies' dancing disposition, the researchers played recordings of classical music, rhythmic beats and speech to infants, and videotaped the results. They also recruited professional ballet dancers to analyze how well the babies matched their movements to the music.

During the experiments, the babies were sitting on a parent's lap, though the adults had headphones to make sure they couldn't hear the music and were instructed not to move.

The researchers found the babies moved their arms, hands, legs, feet, torsos and heads in response to the music, much more than to speech.

Though the ability appears to be innate in humans, the researchers aren't sure why it evolved.

"It remains to be understood why humans have developed this particular predisposition," Zentner said. "One possibility is that it was a target of natural selection for music or that it has evolved for some other function that just happens to be relevant for music processing."

Zentner and his colleague Tuomas Eerola, from the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Research at the University of Jyvaskyla, in Finland, detailed their findings in the March 15 issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
