[New publication] ‘A vaguely defined licence to kill’: jus ad bellum and the War on Terror

In his May 2010 report to the General Assembly, then-Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Philip Alston raised concerns about the ‘displacement of clear legal standards with a vaguely defined licence to kill, and the creation of a major accountability vacuum’. In a forthcoming book chapter available on the Asser SSRN network, Asser researcher Rebecca Mignot-Mahdavi and Nehal Bhuta (University of Edinburgh) reflect on the evolutions of the right of self-defence in the counter-terrorism context.

[ASIL 2021] Roundtable on international law’s role in the governance of AI

Last week, the 2021 virtual annual meeting of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) took place. Chair of the board and academic director of the Asser Institute Janne E. Nijman convened the online closing plenary, focusing on the governance of artificial intelligence (AI), which was moderated by Sadjad Soltanzadeh, postdoctoral researcher in ethics and philosophy of technology at the Asser Institute.

[Blog] EU’s future due diligence legislation will speed up justice for Shell claimants

The EU is currently working on a draft legislation on corporate due diligence that could speed up the often lengthy legal process. Asser researcher Chuwuma Okoli welcomes this development in a blog post for NOVA BHRE: “It is important that clear private international law rules should be developed that gives claimants access to justice without delay."
