Scott's Festival Picks

scott

Scott Ferguson, Executive Director

I’ve had my wrist slapped and been sternly told to only pick five highlights from the 2015 program. I’ll try to show restraint but there are countless gems in this year’s Festival. Here's a quick intro to some of the finest.

1140 limitedpartnership

Limited Partnership
(Tuesday May 26, 5:15pm)

With the U.S. Supreme Court poised to rule on same-sex marriage in June, this intimate and emotionally moving portrait of the 40 year love affair between an American and Australian is more that just another gay love story. Over four decades, Richard Adams and Tony Sullivan fought the American government for their relationship to be recognized and to stay together, most of that time with Tony living illegally in the U.S and under constant threat of deportation.

1140 dontacceptdreamsfromstrangers

Don’t Accept Dreams From Strangers
(Tuesday May 26, 7:30pm)

This love story between a swimmer and the Russian translator he meets while at a competition in St. Petersberg is a subtle yet powerful examination of identity, migration, and the ever-present threat to personal safety that is part of everyday life for LGBT individuals living in Russia.

1140 thechambermaid

The Chambermaid
(Wednesday May 27, 7:45pm)

Quirky and completely charming, The Chambermaid tells the story of Lynn (Vicki Krieps in a captivating performance), a young woman who is trapped in a mundane routine, in which she lives vicariously through others by hiding under the beds of guests at the hotel where she works. When she spies on an encounter between a guest and a dominatrix, she becomes obsessed with the gorgeous sex worker and she sees a chance for a new life.

1140 butterfly

Butterfly
(Thursday May 28, 7:15pm)

Marco Berger takes a huge artistic leap forward with his latest film that is based on the butterfly effect and how one small decision affects the lives and loves of a group of young Argentines. Butterfly’s young cast is charming and immensely likeable and the film is overflowing with quiet moments and expressive gestures that often reveal more than the dialogue itself.

1140 iamsydstone

Gay Shorts: Drama Queens
(Sunday May 31, 1pm)

I’m a huge fan of shorts programs in general – they provide an opportunity to see a diverse selection of work and you’re bound to find something to love. The films in Drama Queens navigate the trials and tribulations of coming out, staying in, hooking up, trying to make it work and facing the reality that sometimes it’s just not meant to be.
