Sample note (please personalize as desired):
Dear Council Member,
In honor of Earth Day, I urge you to sign onto Resolution 549 in the City Council, sponsored by Environmental Committee Chair, Donovan Richards. The resolution asks Governor Cuomo to veto Port Ambrose LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). There is already wide bipartisan opposition to Port Ambrose, with Senator Dean Skelos and multiple state and local Democrats and Republicans sending letters to the Governor.
Port Ambrose would worsen sea level rise and super storms. LNG is 40% WORSE in its warming effect than "natural" gas (which is itself 86 times worse than carbon). We cannot afford to continue building fossil fuel infrastructure that will require city funds to fend off flooding.
Port Ambrose would prevent the construction of a 700MW wind farm (enough energy for 200,000 homes) that is predicted to create 17,000 jobs. New York could become the Eastern Seaboard hub for offshore wind, including the construction of a deepwater port that could bring 43,000 jobs to this area. But not if we build LNG where the wind farm should go. What does Port Ambrose offer in comparison? Only SIX permanent jobs! Wind farms are much better choice for our waterfront than LNG, and the two cannot coexist, according to a recent report from NRDC.
Please let me know if you will sign on to Reso 549, and thank you for your attention to this issue!
