Online Worship Dates Revised

For the health and safety of our community of faith, we are offering online worship temporarily instead of gathering physically on Sunday mornings in the sanctuary. To understand your feelings about resuming in-person worship services, we sent you the "Resuming In-Person Worship" survey in June. Thank you to everyone who completed the survey. Based on your feedback in the survey and the recent upswing in COVID-19 cases in Dane County, the Church Council has decided to continue online worship through October 31. The council will continue to monitor the situation and re-evaluate as is prudent. Please watch for your August Dialogue to read more about what you told us in the worship survey.

13th Sunday After Pentecost

The Gospel for this Sunday:

Matthew 16:21-28

Sacrificial Love

The prophet Jeremiah speaks of the incurable wound of his suffering yet finds in God’s words the delight of his heart. When Peter doesn’t grasp Jesus’ words about suffering, Jesus tells the disciples they will find their lives in losing them. Such sacrificial love is described by Paul when he urges us to associate with the lowly and not repay evil with evil. In worship we gather as a community that we might offer ourselves for the sake of our suffering world.

Church Yard Work: Help Needed!

The fall is rapidly approaching and a perfect time to have a good workout and fun time finishing up the church yard work for the year. Come and join others (at a safe distance), talk to each other as well accomplishing the yard work.

On September 19th , bring your pruning shears, lobbers and rakes to help with cleaning up a number of areas in the back of the church. Jeff Meicher has done considerable work at the church this summer and he will coordinate the work that needs to be done. Close to the church, the bushes need to be trimmed, weeds pulled and mulch put down. The areas that frame the parking lot along Hegg Ave and Lake Edge Blvd need weeds and other unwanted plants removed and mulched.

The work will start at 830 AM to 1100 AM (any amount that you can do is welcomed). The rain date will be the next day, September 20 th at the same times.

On October 24th , from 830 AM to 1100 AM, gather at church to rake the leaves. Please bring rakes and other supplies you might need. Again Jeff Meicher will coordinate the activities. The rain date will be the next day, October 25 th at the
same times.

Be sure to bring your own water and snacks. Unfortunately because of COVID 19, no refreshments will be served. Thanks to all who have been working on the yard this summer and to all of you who will participate this fall.

Anytime: Help With Mulching Needed!

We are in need of help with spreading 5 yards of mulch, and with other yard work on the church property. You are invited to stop by when you have the time. Please contact Jeff Meicher for information on where mulch is to be spread, other work that needs to be done and tools you will need. Thanks!

Something New! Small Outdoor Gatherings

social distant masks

Lake Edge Lutherans Catching up!

Lake Edge’s Membership Support Mission was recently zooming and thinking of how much we missed seeing our fellow Lake Edge members in person. We hatched an idea to have small, outdoor gatherings in order to “catch up” with people in our church family. Since visiting outside is considered acceptable, we decided to set up opportunities to meet while the weather is pleasant and inviting. The sites might be a driveway, a backyard, a park, large patio, church parking lot or any area where people can spread out.

Everyone is invited but please assess your own level of risk and decide what is best for your health and safety. We will try to find hosts in various parts of our membership area, but you are not defined by your neighborhood. If the time works for you, consider yourself invited! RSVPs are recommended.

We will have 1-2 different times and locations each week.

There is one option today – all are welcome!
Thursday, August 27; 6:30 pm; Church parking lot Hosted by Jean Berg; RSVP to 608-347-4387 or

Next week:
Saturday, September 5; 1:00 – 3:00 pm; Judy and Jim St Vincent’s boathouse roof patio 2889 Bible Camp Rd, McFarland; RSVP to 608.838.1677 or
NOTE: This location has an uneven stone and paver path with two steps; please
choose a different small group option if that poses a barrier.

We will reduce risk by:
* Wearing masks properly (covering your nose and mouth).
* Observing at least 6 feet of distance.
* Bringing our own chairs (If unable, contact your host who may be able to provide a
* sanitized one.)
* Providing our own refreshments.
* Restrooms will not be available for guests at host’s homes or the church at this point.
Please plan accordingly.

Watch each week’s e-newsletter for upcoming Catching up opportunities. A few more hosts are needed! Please contact Lesta Searles at 608-222-5420 or if you would like to host.
Note: The visits will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Response Journaling: Finding Joy

How are you finding joy in the midst of the pandemic?

We have been spending extra time with our granddaughter, Kayla, during the pandemic. She received a rock painting book and a gift card to buy supplies this summer for her 9th birthday. So, we have been learning how to paint rocks! In the process, she passed on some wisdom from her art teacher at school: If you make an "oops", just turn it into a "beautiful oops"! Many of the finished rocks have happy pictures and hopeful messages. We have taken some of them to a nearby park, where Kayla leaves them in special spots for people to discover. So, that's one thing we have been doing: Learning something new. Embracing the "beautiful oops"! And sharing our joy with others.

Do You Have Something to Share About Finding Joy?

Peace and love. Milele.

Healing House

healing house

September 13-19

The Healing House is a place a homeless child or family member can go to heal after surgery. Lake Edge has partnered with UCC, (United Church of Christ) to provide meals to the families who are temporarily housed there due to surgery or childbirth. There are 63 medical respites in the United States; Healing House is the first in Wisconsin. Madison’s Healing House is at 303 Lathrop Street. It is an eight bed facility. They need our help with meals for the residents.

Our dates are September 13-19. Our church will be responsible for a day or two, not the entire week. Anita and I are looking for individuals who have an interest in this volunteer opportunity. Even if you are vaguely interested please contact one of us so we can put you on a call back list for helping. Because of COVID it is not clear, right if we will be able to provide a hot meal or just the groceries.
