2017 Design Trends Are Back To Nature

In 2017 people will display a more conscientious approach to consumerism, preferring more quality solutions and natural, earthy materials. A growing desire to reconnect with nature is the year's norm. The Pantone choice for Colour of the Year 2017, Greenery, confirmed it too. Expect to see a lot of wood as a main material, but combined with raw whites, marbles, concrete overlays, concrete stains, and metallic details. These materials are the ones to watch in 2017.

Textures

This is the year we see textures being a big theme, as shown by some new and exciting in plasters, clays, concretes, and exposed brickwork. 2017 will see a pressing drive from consumers for sustainable, eco-friendly interiors.

Metals

Large scale geometric furniture pieces in glamorous ‘bold gold’ and black are featuring, and gold, brass and burnished metals will be seen in 2017 range hoods, side tables, and hardware. Keep your eyes open for the ever cozy tin panels; they're back. Also, this year copper and rust are the showstoppers for light fixtures and exterior accents such as weather vanes and gutters.

Colors

Earthy colours are set to become increasingly popular in 2017: powdery pink, terracotta, sand, ochre, cinnamon, rust, olive green. They provide a great way to introduce subtle colour into muted schemes, so they work brilliantly in minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired homes where brighter shades might jar. They’re both warming and calming, and they look wonderful offset against neutrals. They’re incredibly versatile, too: you could start small by introducing a few earth-coloured ceramics, or go bolder and paint the walls or stain the floor.

Faux Finishes

Homeowners and designers are turning to faux materials for pocketbook friendly and sometime more durable than authentic materials. For example faux wood beams will not bow or split. Faux leathers, foliage, wood tile, fur are hot, hot, hot!

Artisanal vs. DIY

For years Instagram, Etsy, and Pinterest have been obsessing over DIY projects. 2017 designers have shifted gears and seek more artisan items and finishes. According to Patti Carpenter of carpenter + company, "you'll see craftsmanship and materials that require a highly level of skill emerge". Ah-hem!

Think Raw

I saw a great deal of white these past few years. Raw white is here to stay. Think chalky white and bone white in anything that looks unearthed, imperfect, and handmade. Raw white's fling has just begun.

Hand Painted Walls

A modern minimalist mural is 2017 chic. Murals combining the popular gold with subdued smoky, earth tones offer bigger-than-framed-art ambiance.
