A Message from Senior Lead Officer, Ralph Sanchez

blank badge lapd

There has been an uptick in burglaries and attempted burglaries in Los Angeles. This is not specific to Laurel Canyon, it's city wide.

If you’re going out of town, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on things. Take in your mail, newspapers, better yet- arrange for them to be held at the post office until you return.

It's important to be vigilant and look out for your neighbors. If you don't know your neighbors, introduce yourself, that way you'll know when there are unfamiliar people or suspicious behavior on your street.

Lock your doors, windows and gates. Use your alarms, motion detection lights and security cameras. If you don't have a security system, look into getting one.

Any suspicious looking vehicles in the neighborhood? Use caution, but try to take down a plate number or any distinctive markings and email them to me. Even better a photo, if you can safely take one.

If you suspect there are squatters in vacant houses, contact the Hollywood Station and follow up with me in an email that has the address and all the details, photos and video if you have any. If your house is vacant or will be vacant for some reason, contact me and I'll write up an Authorization of No Trespass and keep it on file to prevent squatting on your vacant property. These authorizations are good for a year.

Please, do not leave anything in your vehicles, laptops, music equipment, cell phones, even if your car is in your driveway, take your valuables inside with you. You’re asking for someone to break in and steal it if you leave it in your car. And please don’t have packages delivered to your house if you're not home to sign for it, chances are your package won't be there when you get home.

Homeless encampments. If you see one, report it to the Hollywood Station or your local fire station, you can email and let me know once you report it.

Stay aware and stay safe.

Know Your Police Lingo

Burglary: The unlawful entry into almost any structure (not just a home or business) with the intent to commit any crime inside (not just theft/larceny). No physical breaking and entering is required; the offender may simply trespass through an open door. Unlike robbery, which involves use of force or fear to obtain another person's property, there is usually no victim present during a burglary.

What is a Hot Prowl Burglary? A Hot Prowl is when a burglary is committed but the resident is home. Most burglars target homes they believe are unoccupied, and are not looking for confrontation. Confrontation increases the danger for both parties and most times the thief would just like to take your property and run.

A major contributing factor to most Hot Prowl burglaries is that the victim’s home was left open, unsecured, or unlocked. Burglars have told LAPD they look for open or unlocked doors or windows and that most times they can find them.

Theft: Theft is the unauthorized taking of property from another with the intent to permanently deprive them of it.

Robbery: Theft of property or money through the offender's use of physical force or fear against a victim. Where a deadly weapon such as a gun is used or the victim suffers injury, the robbery may be charged as "armed" or "aggravated." Unlike burglary, the crime of robbery almost always requires the presence of a victim who suffers actual injury, or is threatened with harm.

What is a Home Invasion Robbery? A home invasion is an unlawful entry into another person's home with the intention to perform an illegal act. The illegal act may be a burglary, but it may also consist of other criminal acts such as murder, rape, kidnapping and more. Typically, the residents of the home are present during the home invasion.
