This Just In…
Dates of the 2016 Dow Corning Tennis Classic are January 31-February 7, a little earlier than usual to fit the schedules of top players. Sharon Cleland, Director of Tennis, is the new Director of the DCTC.
The DCTC is a USTA $100,000 Pro Circuit Event that has grown in stature and reputation, earning industry and national media attention in the “Best Tennis Town in the US.” Midland is the top stop among players from 20-plus nations, competing on the 80-city ITF-USTA Tour.
Players cite professional tournament management and “home away from home hospitality” among their reasons to “Play Midland.” |

10’s Intel
The coach is the critical factor if your child is going to let tennis discover her/him. The coach determines if a child will be active, included, learn new skills, develop as a young athlete, and learn fair play through character development, and get better having way too much fun.
Your 10’s Coach is John “Pied Piper” Telfer, PTR, 631-6151, Director of 10-Under Tennis, Midland native, former high school tennis star, classical guitarist/composer turned tennis pro. |
Member Murmurs
Tennis is an imperfect game, intentionally constructed by rules, practice and play for miscalculation, stroke or placement failure, bad geometry and the sudden deflation of your focus to hit the ball on the first bounce over that net thingy.
That’s what makes tennis mentally confrontational, physically healthy and emotionally challenging.
You make shots. You miss shots. Your serve goes into the lake. The boundaries of the court force your hand, while the competition causes your brain to roll, rattle and shake.
Warning: Perfectionists should not play tennis without a shrink on speed dial. |
High Plains Drifter
Right in the middle of an aggressive baseline exchange, kick up your High Plains Drifter (lob) aimed at the baseline. Now your opponent has to provide pace on a slow, high ball, while you have the good sense to take the net for a krispy/kreme volley winner. |
Just Ask Us!
Ask Advantage- Pro Shop staff to explain the technical features of the racquets and how they fit your game. Basically, the manufacturers offer different combinations of power, touch and control, shock and vibration management, various weights and grip sizes, plus wild graphics and hip names.
Yes, we’ll suggest the right strings too. New pro Erik Seifert, certified Master Racquet Technician, can explain the string music that fits your style whether Beethoven, Stravinsky, Maroon 5 or Tina McBride. |

Season’s Best
Lots of new members are asking for courts. The race is on! Our advice: For the best choice of courts and play times, go for seasonal courts ASAP. Tennis balls are free.
