Auspicious Deal & Some Cultural Differences - part 2

(organization)
Hello ,

Greetings from Yiwu, China where I have just arrived.

Last week I was telling you about Mr Two-wife's in Bali and our warehouse rent negotiations.. you can read it here.
Since then I have been rushing round the island and the main city of Denpasar late the other night tying up lose ends and getting all our deals in motion. I took a trip via Hong Kong, and landed in Yiwu very late, bedraggled and worn out.

Last week were facing a large rent increase on our warehouse in Yellow Coconut Village and I was explaining some of the cultural differences involved in doing business in Asia.
Well lots of you wrote to me with your thoughts and advice, thank you! Nobody suggested we should stick with Mr Two-wifes. And a few made the point that any saving could be passed on in more competitive pricing for our valued customers. Good point!

But I was concerned, because giving notice to Mr Two-wifes without first securing the deal on the new warehouse - in the same small village - was a big risk. Strings could be pulled and we could be left without anything. Well we would have to move to another village but that would be inconvenient, especially since we would probably have to find new staff.
We had an offer on the table of a new warehouse just across the road, four years up front payment for the same price as one year in the current place. (Last week I was explaining the culture of a lease is only as long as you can pay up front).

10am.. So Ringo (our man in Bali) called Mr Two-wifes.. and after a long speech about how good he had been to us, how happy we were to do business how we hope to do business in the future what a good landlord etc etc.. he delivered the news that we were going.. long pause.. he obviously asked where to? But Ringo tactfully avoided an answer.

OK I said.. now lets hottail it to see the new landlord, we need to get something signed and a deposit paid.
11 am.. We meet the new guy. There is a problem, it seems that after checking he only owns the land for the next two and half years, after that he must renegotiate the land rent from the land boss. OK.. where is the land boss?
11.30 am..Conveniently next door..

The land boss on the left, warehouse boss on the right. After a little friendly negotiating he agreed to extend the land lease.. for a share of the rental money. So we were back in business. Everyone happy.

11.45am.. Phone call from Mr Two-wifes, an offer of 10% discount if we stay, although he would like use of a small room we have not used (saving face).. again asks where we are going.

12 am.. meeting with new warehouse boss.. in the new warehouse.

We write down all the terms we have discussed on a piece of paper. Ringo pulls out the backpack of cash we take everywhere and counts out ten million Indonesian Rupees.

The "contract" made out to Mr David, is signed by all three of us placed on top of the deposit money. We all take pictures on our mobile phones for verification. There is one last job before we shake hands.. we have to call the Village Head Man. It should be no problem but it is polite to get permission. The new warehouse boss makes the call..
Yes, yes, he is explaining I think all the terms, the Village Boss knows us already. But has Mr Two-wifes got to him... ?

There is a problem, actually three problems. Now we are in trouble, I'm thinking.

First off can Ringo meet the village boss to discus, about plants and how we can make the warehouse more pretty.. no problem.
Second can we make a donation to the village fund.. OK.. how much.. 100,000 Rupees. Woh.. wait a minute, that's mm about £5 - OK, no problem.
and the last issue.. he thinks that 10 Million deposit is not a good number. For rent deposits, it is auspicious to have a 9 in it.. so the deposit reduced to 9 Million, and everyone is happy.
Those Cultural Differences again. Do a deal with a 9 in it and much good luck and prosperity will come.
