An Important Notice for Rabbit Lovers
Calicivirus is a disease of rabbits that was originally introduced to Australia in 1996 to control wild populations.
In order to avoid unintended infection, it has been recommended that owners of pet rabbits vaccinate their bunnies against the virus once a year, this is because treatment is frequently unsuccessful.
Late last year however, a new strain of Calicivirus (from Europe) inexplicably started showing up in wild and pet rabbits from across Victoria and NSW. This has caused understandable concern to rabbit lovers.
Last month the Australian Veterinary Association released its guidelines for rabbit owners seeking to prevent illness from this new strain, the good news is that existing vaccines should remain effective and once yearly administration should be sufficient for most bunnies.
