“To see Zoe Rahman in full flood is one of the more startling experiences in British jazz…a furnace of musical energy”

The Telegraph

Dreamland is Zoe's sixth album on her own, Manushi imprint and her first solo recording. It follows on from duo recordings with Czech bass star George Mraz and British jazz great Courtney Pine. For Rahman it felt like the logical next step, “I’ve been playing solo gigs for a long time, so have built up a repertoire of tracks that I wanted to record and people kept asking me on gigs when I was going to record a solo album!” It’s a remarkable achievement, allowing one of Europe’s most talented pianists to fully explore the tonal/textural possibilities and the vast dynamic range of the instrument. The album was recorded in a day and the majority of the tracks were done in one take, as she wanted a live feel to the music. “Playing solo is very exposed and is both liberating and daunting, as it’s so much more open than working with other musicians”. As Rahman points out, the piano was designed to be played solo anyway. “There’s so much scope in the instrument to create different sounds and rhythms and I draw inspiration from musicians who use the instrument like an orchestra. There are many different approaches to playing solo – I’m inspired by pianist/composers like Jessica Williams, Duke Ellington, Abdullah Ibrahim, Thelonious Monk as they all have a real depth to their sound, and their compositions resonate with me.”
