Developing People and Empowering Communities

This year, we were able to provide 75 workshops and presentations to 3,939 people. Of these, 36 were delivered to 2,216 people through community organizations such as: Boat People SOS, OCA - National, and Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies.

Through LEAP’s numerous programs, we provided leadership training for mid-career corporate managers, senior staff of nonprofit organizations, higher education professionals, and college students. These programs included:

Senior Managers Leadership Program, a 2.5-day program designed to prepare senior level API managers to assume the next level of management and acquire skills to meet the challenges of executive leadership. (15 participants)
Path to Professional Success, a 3-day leadership development program designed to promote the professional development of API employees within corporations. (145 participants)
Emerging Leaders Program, a three part, six-month program designed to build nonprofit organizational capacity by developing API staff for future and current leadership and management roles in nonprofit organizations. -- Sponsored by American Express, The Coca Cola Company, Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, Southern California Edison, Southwest Airlines – The Official Airline of the Emerging Leaders Program, and The Ong Family Foundation. (16 participants)
Leadership Development Program in Higher Education in partnership with Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education, a 4-day leadership development program for API higher education administrative staff and faculty. (33 participants)
Leadership in Action, an 8-week paid summer internship program designed to develop emerging young leaders by providing college students with practical leadership skills and the opportunity to work hands-on in the API community in Southern California. -- Sponsored by Nissan and Cardinal Health. (5 participants) This year, for their community impact project, these interns created a short film entitled Three Letters. This short film aims to inspire API people to become more involved in their communities, come together to fight for social justice, and combat invisibility and marginalization in American mainstream society and discourse. You can watch this video at

We also held three Career and Leadership Seminars that were sponsored by Nissan. (160 participants) The purpose of these seminars is for API professionals to share their career experiences with a college age audience and provide a broader range of career options and tips on how to find jobs in the current economy. In planning these seminars, we worked closely with students and faculty at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Irvine. We also partnered with numerous young professional organizations who attended the events and networked with the students.
