We want YOU for the SoCal Board!

SoCal Board Recruitment

The SoCal League is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation whose mission is to bring cross-country mountain biking to schools across the 10 counties of southern California. Though people are most familiar with our race staff and coaches, the SoCal League Board of Directors plays a CRUCIAL role in making sure the League has the resources and guidance to keep it on track and growing in a sustainable way.

As we enter our 6th year, grow to as many as 45 teams, and add a middle school component; the League is looking for a few good board members! You might be a great candidate if:

You love the idea of energizing more kids, coaches, and families through the bike.
You have ideas on how to improve upon the work the League is doing.
You have a professional background that would benefit the League.
You don't have the day-to-day time to coach a team but do have time available to focus on specific items to support the League.
You want to sell the work and mission of the League to decision makers in organizations that can help support our work.

You don't have to have all of the above. The primary thing you need is a passion to work to keep the SoCal League a premier organization! Board members serve 2 year terms so if you have at least 2 years to help make a difference contact SoCal Board President Jon Tanklage and ask how you can get involved! You don't have to have any previous involvement with the League as a coach or parent.

Racing Season

The SoCal League is a spring high school sport with a racing season that begins in late February and runs through mid May. There are 5 races that are a part of the SoCal series and riders come from all over the SoCal League for each race. Student-athletes compete in 4 categories (Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior Varsity, and Varsity) with boys and girls fields in each category. Awards are given out for the top 5 racers in each field every race. Overall individual awards in each field are given out at the conclusion of the 5th race.

Teams compete in two divisions. Division 1 is for teams of 12 or more riders. Division 2 is for teams of 11 or fewer riders. Team scoring is coed. Division 1 teams score the top 8 riders at each race with at least 2 of the scores being "opposite sex" (i.e.: 6 girls and 2 boys). Division 2 teams score the top 4 riders at each race with at least 1 of the scores being "opposite sex." However, because you never know who is going to score for a team, ALL riders are important to team scoring. You never know when your placing, though it might not be one of YOUR team's scoring places, might bump ANOTHER team's scoring rider down one spot lower where there are fewer points thus improving your team's standings. Team awards in each division are given out at the end of each race and overall season team awards are given out at the last race of the series.

After the conclusion of the SoCal series, there is a State Championship race for qualified riders. The race is held in conjunction with the NorCal League. States was hosted by NorCal in 2013 and will be again in 2014. States will be hosted by SoCal in 2015 and 2016.

To keep things simple all high school races take place on Sunday and follow the same schedule. This year we are adding middle school riders to select races as part of a pilot program. Middle school races will occur Saturday afternoon at two races (race #3 and race #5).

For more information check out the RACE page where race flyers and course maps are posted. Be sure to always print out and bring a race flyer to the race to help you follow the racing action!
