Happy Thanksgiving!

As we enter the thick of the winter holidays we want to wish you a ride filled day of thanks. There is so much good happening in high school mountain biking that we're thankful for. Sweet dirt. Cool air. And lots of friends and family to share the experience with! As a Thanksgiving gift we've posted maps and flyers for the first 4 races of the 2014 series right HERE.

Dr. Al Nash and Brian Lopes discuss the finer points of riding super fast while mustached at SoCal CycleFest 2013.

CycleFest and Scholarships

The SoCal League held its 6th annual CycleFest celebration in Pasadena on November 16th. A packed house was inspired and humored by witty student-athletes, educated on some Pasadena cycling history during the presentation of the Community Impact Award to the Pasadena Athletic Association, motivated by multiple time World Champion Brian Lopes, and satiated with a fine meal and great auction.

But most importantly, a roomful of generous donors joined the SoCal League Donor Paceline to help keep some of our riders and coaches out of the buffeting wind by providing scholarships for the 2013-14 season.

Thanks to a combination of SoCal donors and a pledged grant from the NICA Booster Fund the SoCal League hopes to ensure that as many student-athletes and coaches as possible will be able to take part in our racing, camping, and coaching programs.

If you would like to find out more about our scholarship program please look HERE. If you would like to help us continue to ensure the fullest participation possible please consider supporting us through a tax deductible donation.

Registration Recap

Many of you are new to the SoCal League and this is the first time you have registered to be part of our program as coaches, parents, and student-athletes. Because of this we understand that there are often many questions about the registration process! Here is a quick summary to help get you going or to help you ask the right questions.

If you participate as part of a team there are several components to registration. Your team is a free standing entity that will have its own registration and payment process to become a member. Check with your coach to ensure you are completing the necessary steps to be a member in good standing of your team. Because teams get their insurance through SoCal/NICA, each team member is required to complete an "Agreement to Participate and Release of Liability" form and give it to their coach before riding. The team will keep this form in perpetuity. Each year the insurance policy resets so each year the rider needs to complete one of these forms. The team insurance policy covers all team riders during regularly scheduled and coach run practices from the time the team is fully registered (no earlier than October 15) until the end of the season (no later than May 31).

In addition to registering for your team, you must register with SoCal/NICA. If you are part of a team your coach will send you an email "invitation" from the Pit Zone online registration system. The email will have a link in it you can follow back to complete your profile (otherwise known as registering). Once you complete your profile you will have the option to pay the $10 NICA annual membership, to pay the $40 SoCal Race Series fee, and to pay for any of the 5 SoCal Race Series races at $45 per race.

ALL riders (high school and middle school) will pay the $10 NICA annual membership fee.
HIGH SCHOOL riders intending to race will pay the $40 SoCal Race Series fee and $45 for each race they intend on doing. Riders don't have to pay for all races up front. They can pay race-by-race if they want. Online pre-registration is open through Monday evening ahead of race weekend. If you miss pre-registration you may pay at the race at a cost of $55.
MIDDLE SCHOOL riders do not pay the race series fee or race fee. Middle school riders intending to race will pay $25 for each of the 2 middle school races. Middle school race fees will be collected at registration on race day.

After completing registration online riders download their pre-filled paperwork from their dashboard in the Pit Zone. Paperwork MUST be printed, signed, and mailed in. Once a rider has completed registration online, paid fees, and NICA has received their paperwork they will show as "Race Ready" in the Pit Zone. Each race a rider has paid for will also show a check mark. Any questions on receipt of paperwork or payments should be directed to Julia at NICA (julia@nationalmtb.org).

HIGH SCHOOL aged team riders who show as "Race Ready" with race fees paid ahead of the first race will receive their season race plate from their coach race morning. That will be their plate for the season (don't lose them). Non-race ready riders will need to come to registration race morning to take care of any paperwork and payment issues and receive their plate.

Independent riders follow all of the above except they need to send an email to matt@socaldirt.org asking to register as an independent rider. Once registered, independent riders will come to registration race morning to pick up their plate.

The Pit Zone registration system is always accessible on the right side of the menu bar at www.socaldirt.org.
