July

I can’t believe it’s already you, July.
Half the year has now passed me by.
A moment ago it was New Year’s Day
With fresh resolutions to pave my way.

My chagrin is rescued by wondrous July
As gorgeous fireworks light up the sky.
This freedom that I assume is owed
Was purchased by many a bloody road.

Though air is sultry and mosquitoes bold,
I prefer you, July, to the winter’s cold.

tree pit enlargement

TreePEP COMING TO NORTH FLATBUSH AVENUE BID

Tree Pit Enlargements coming soon

TreePEP is a 501c3 organization who's primary role is to enlarge tree pits where needed primarily in Park Slope, Brooklyn. They also rebuild sidewalks that have been damaged by tree roots.

Executive Director, Sharon Davidson has been working with TreePEP and Brooklyn Forestry all along North Flatbush Avenue to get a better view of which pits needs enlargements and improvements.

The trees along our avenue are over 40 years old and can survive another 40 years as long as they are properly maintained. Larger pits will help the roots of the trees and we need store owners to water the trees regularly, even after rainy days.

We will have more info in the coming months as to when this project may start. In the meantime, if you have a tree in front of your store that you feel needs attention, please let us know at info@nfbid.com.

Message from Executive Director, Sharon Davidson

* Dear Friends of the North Flatbush Avenue BID,

As I come to a close of another successful fiscal year with the North Flatbush Avenue BID. I cant help but feel gratification with all our accomplishments of the past year. Our 27th Annual Meeting was a great success and we look forward to our next fiscal year 2014!

Here are some of the things I am working on for the North Flatbush Aenue BID District:

Our new NFBID Banner should be completed and installed by the end of August. Look for it above on our office building located at 282 Building, on the corner of Prospect Place, right above our BID window! Our offices can be easily located and we hope you will feel free to stop by anytime!

Our 2014 Guest Speaker Series is starting to shape up for September with our first Guest Speaker Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. Flyers and news of date and time will be going to all our merchants and we hope to see everyone there. As you all know, Bill de Blasio is running for Mayor of NYC, this is the time to ask questions of the candidate in an informal setting.

I am working a Merchant Mixer for late August for all our merchants to gather for a night of cocktails and hor d'oeuvres. Many of you have expressed interest in a get-together with all our merchants of The North Flatbush Avenue BID to grow your network, cultivate your professional relationship, and getting to know the new businesses in our area.

I will continue to provide our Quarterly Merchant Workshops on all types of topics that will benefit our small businesses, including the NYPD's new Operation I.D. Program with Sergeant Raymond Morales. Flyers will be distributed date and times or you can check out our website.

Make Music NYwas a great success and we will fulfill this program once again with live, free music on North Flatbush Avenue next June, many of you have expressed interest in this program for 2014.

I am also working with TreePEP to fix our much needed in repair tree pits. Our trees are very old and they survive much longer with the proper care. Some of our trees are being uprooted between the subway grates, some need wider pits and some of our sidewalk needs repair.

I am also gearing up for 2 weekends in October 20 and 27th for the biggest FALL FEST yet! With pumpkin giveaways, children's costume parade and prizes, raffles, games, face-painting, music, chess and all kinds of food from our local merchants and the Brooklyn Boulders Rock Climbing Wall. Trick or Treat for UNICEF is a big part of the BID. We will once again have orange donation boxes at all our merchants shops.

Santa will be on North Flatbush Avenue in December and we will bring back the Santa Trolley, hopefully the BrooklyKnight too! and maybe some surprise guests! Candy canes of course for the children. This year we will have a $5 raffle to win a free Xmas tree from one of our sidewalk Xmas tree vendors! and how about some Christmas Carolers on North Flatbush Avenue?.

I am continuing my work with Department of Transportation, NYC Parks and the Parsons Design Team on our Capital Street Scape Project with will start construction in Spring 2014! We hope to have some conceptual drawings to show by early 2014! Our new pedestrian plazas at 8th, 7th and 6th Avenue with new way-finding signage, additional bike racks, new benches and flowering planters, our plazas will be a wonderful respite for our area, a place to rest, sit and socialize and enjoy public life. It will be great to see these plazas utilized and enlivened with public events on weekends too. 8 am Yoga anyone? I am looking into ways to bring free wi-fi to these areas.

We will once again participate in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden GreenBridge Program "Greenest Block in Brooklyn" Contest. We have had 3 winners in the past and hopefully a new winner this year! Start thinking about greening your storefront.

I will continue my work by partnering with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and Forest City Companies to help cross promoting with our merchants on event game and concert evenings at Barclays Center.

Our holiday lights and colorful holiday banners will be installed in November and our new 2014 BID banners will be installed in late January. We will once again have a contest for local graphic artists to design our new banners. Watch our website for details.

I encourage everyone to shop local and shop on North Flatbush Avenue. By shopping here, it keeps our district energized with foot traffic. Where we shop, where we eat and have fun, all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of our district. Why go anywhere else, when we have it all here on North Flatbush Avenue.

The BID has plenty of 2013-14 Shopping, Dining and Services guides in the office for display in your restaurant or shop. If you haven't received your Merchant Packet and NFBID Decal for your window or door, we have a few packets left in our offices. (This packet contains very useful information for your business). We still have a few bike vests and the NYCDOT ToolKits packages for your bicycle deliveries.

The BID office will be closed July 3rd through July 9th, July 22nd through July 26th and August 28th through September 8th. You can reach me anytime during these vacation days at info@nfbid.com.

The next e-News Monthly Newsletter will be September 10th, 2013.

Have a wonderful and safe July 4th holiday everyone!

See you on the Avenue !

Regards,

Sharon
