Director's Note

It's that time of year when our student-athletes are going back to school! And with that comes an upswing in calls and emails from eager coaches, parents and students looking to get their teams rolling into the new season. Are you ready?

Earlier this month we hosted the first annual NICA Conference. League directors from seven NICA Leagues participated in three days of educational presentations, collaborating on projects and planning for the future. In September NICA will be two years old (hard to believe!) and we already have such an outstanding group of league directors realizing the NICA mission.

A busy fall is planned with Leaders' Summits (coaches conference) in four locations, and our opening event for Colorado is September 18 (click here to volunteer). We are also looking forward to launching some exciting new programs and another league at Interbike later in September. To follow the latest news and participate in upcoming contests be sure to "like" our NICA Facebook page.

Enjoy the continued warm summer weather!

Student Spotlight on Silas Harrison, Washington League

When Washington High School Cycling League member Silas Harrison learned that funding for trail maintenance and building programs around his hometown of Issaquah was in question, he decided to get involved.

After obtaining information about a forthcoming meeting of the City of Issaquah Parks and Recreation Department, he showed up to the city hall and took advantage of the public comments process that is part of such meetings.

Silas said, “I spoke about why I thought that continuing to maintain and build trails in the Issaquah area was important for our community, and also about my experiences with the high school mountain bike league.”

Although he is not yet aware of a decision on the subject, Silas said it was a very positive experience. “Everyone there seemed very interested in NICA and the high school league, and thought it was really cool.”

And his main takeaway? “It is important to take action in your community if you want to accomplish something.”

NICA Volunteer Program

Want to help promote high school mountain biking coast-to-coast? Volunteer for NICA!

We are looking for passionate, enthusiastic people to join our NICA Volunteer Database. As a non-profit organization, we depend on volunteer work to complete our numerous programs each year. Volunteers can be local to the NICA office in Berkeley or can live anywhere in the United States (we can use your help either way!).

As a NICA Volunteer, you will receive occasional emails asking for your help with a variety of tasks in support of existing leagues or groundwork for new leagues.

To join, go to NICA Volunteer Program and fill out the information form. You will be informed as soon as projects come up!

Austin presents to the Washington League Leaders' Summit.

Austin McInerny Joins NICA as Educational Programs Director

Austin McInerny, a key member of this high school mountain bike movement since its beginnings in 2001, has joined NICA as the Educational Programs Director to oversee NICA’s growing educational programs for coaches and ride leaders.

McInerny said, “We have worked diligently since 2001 to build on our experiences of working with high school student athletes to develop the Leaders’ Summit curriculum, which presents the foundation for responsible and appropriate cycling-specific coaching of young men and women. I am honored to work with NICA and the increasing number of dedicated coaches and volunteers that are helping grow the sport of cycling.”

One of McInerny’s goals will be to expand the educational opportunities for coaches. The NICA program is unique in that it provides the only high school age specific coaching license program in the country, with nearly 400 individuals presently licensed at four levels. Expanding the opportunities for coaches will elevate the quality of NICA programs.

Attendance at a summit is the first step toward starting a high school cycling club or even building a new high school regional league.
