The Astronomy & Space Exploration Society at the University of
Toronto is hosting the 8th annual “Expanding Canada’s Frontiers” symposium. The country’s largest astronomy symposium takes place at 7 p.m. on January 28, 2011 at the University of Toronto’s Convocation Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m.

2010 was an exciting year in astronomy. Recent technological developments such as the Large Hadron-Collider have allowed us to begin to crack some of the biggest mysteries of the universe. Considering this, the theme of this year’s ASX symposium is, “Unraveling the Universe.”

Guest speakers this year include:

Dr. Alexei Vladimir Filippenko, from the University of California at Berkeley and one of the world’s premiere researchers on supernovae
Dr. Michel Lefebvre, founder of the Canadian ATLAS collaboration project and recent chair of the Subatomic Physics Grant Selection Committee of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Dr. Gilbert Holder, the Canada Research Chair in Cosmological Astrophysics and associate professor of physics at McGill University

Symposium Tickets Pick-up Schedule

Physical tickets are required to enter Con Hall for the symposium. Please pick up your tickets early.

Student Tickets:
After register your tickets online, you can come to pick up your free tickets at our office with a piece of valid student ID during the following dates and hours.

Tuesday, Jan. 25: 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Wednesday, Jan. 26: 3:00 - 4:00 pm

StarTalks is created in the spirit of ASX's mission, "to educate, excite and inspire students and the general public about astronomy and space". The program is designed to give communities, organizations, and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TEDx-like experiences. At the event, a combination of live presenters and videos sparks deep conversation and connections.

i) Format: A suite of short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances (live, or just videos) on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder -- and to provoke conversations that matter

ii) Bias-free programming: Lack of any commercial, religious or political agenda
