Hi and welcome to the LEED'r newsletter!

by Daryl Dworkin

Whether you are just getting "into" the green movement or you have been for sometime then you will enjoy the LEED'r. LEED is an acronym which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

As the LEED* designation suggests excellence in green building and design, so does the LEED'r represent excellence in reporting, educating, and following the environmental arena.

A worldwide paradigm shift is occurring regarding the way people are perceiving the impact of the environment upon their everyday life. A global change in laws, policies, and ideals are causing a phenomenon to occur. More and more people are realizing that the green revolution -is not just a passing fad - but is here to stay. Green building alone has increased four-fold over the last few years. The Leed'r will be bringing you compelling stories and cutting edge news in and around the green community...stay tuned...

Green Building Facts

The overall green building market (both non-residential and residential) is likely to more than double from $36-49 billion in 2009 to $96-140 billion by 2013.
The construction market accounts for 13.4% of the $13.2 trillion U.S. GDP.
Buildings represent 38.9% of U.S. primary energy use (includes fuel input for production), and represent 72% of U.S electricity consumption.
An upfront investment of 2% in green building design, on average, results in life cycle savings of 20% of the total construction costs – more than ten times the initial investment.
Sales in stores with skylights were up to 40% higher compared to similar stores without skylights.
Students with the most daylighting in their classrooms progressed 20% faster on math tests and 26% faster on reading tests in one year than those with less daylighting.
