Fall is well and truly here, and winter is knocking at the door, but I'm going to ask you to think warm and sunny thoughts for a moment or two while I catch you up on my busy summer:
In a summer filled with wondrous, amazing things, my apple tree achieved the most wondrous thing of all: apples!
Nearly 30 years ago we planted 3 apple trees in our yard. They all lived short and uneventful lives (no flowers, no apples). We cut them down, ending our little experiment. However, one tree grew up from the rootstock, and continued to grow, also very uneventfully (no blossoms, no apples), for many years. It was just something to mow around. Many times we threatened to chop it down, but never quite got around to it.
Imagine our amazement when this spring it flowered! Beautiful, perfumed blossoms.
We were even more amazed when we found apples. Six of them. Some worms ate one, and we ate the rest. Delicious, crunchy, tart and sweet. Proving that good things do come to those who wait (or procrastinate!).
And now for some of the wondrous, amazing things I did this summer:
Anne-Denise Mejaki, Iris Shields, and I, also known as Spirits of the Heart had a very successful 3 days at the Bikers' Reunion to Battle Cancer. We met some very interesting people from all over the world, made some new friends and connections, and managed to raise over $200 for the local cancer unit through our rose fundraiser. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported our efforts to raise money for this cause.
Sharing our pink and yellow paintings, jewellery and fused glass with so many people from around the world was so rewarding, and such an honour.
I enjoy collaborating with these two talented and generous artists, and feel very blessed to have connected with them.
Art in the Park
Art in the Park, part of North Bay's Summer in the Park, was truly a wonderous experience. Perfect weather, a great venue, and meeting so many people who understand what I am trying to express in my art and jewellery made this a tremendous adventure. I am planning on returning next year!
"Euphoria" Exhibit travels to North Bay
The Spirits of the Heart just wrapped up our second successful exhibit and sale at the Euphoria Smoothies on Lakeshore Drive in North Bay. We have plans to hit the road with it again, but for now it will be coming back to New Liskeard to hang at the Euphoria Smoothies on Whitewood Avenue. If you missed it the first time around, here is your chance to see it. The exhibit/sale will hang from November 1st until December 31st. Order a gourmet coffee or tea from Nat, and enjoy a little art break! Our affordable little purple and green paintings make special, personal gifts to friends and family - or even yourself!
New and Improved Website!
I've been wanting to do this for so long, but never seemed to be able to find the time. I still can't find the time, but I'm doing it anyway! It's still a work in progress, as I seriously underestimated the time it would take, but I'm so excited about it that I'm unveiling it anyway. The change I'm most excited about is that now it is possible to purchase directly from the site, using PayPal, which is a very popular and respected, secure online payment system. My (sadly neglected) blog is now part of my website, making it easier to keep up with my crazy, creative life. So please go and check it out when you get a minute. I'd love to get your feedback about it. There are still a few areas not quite finished, but I'm working to complete it as quickly as I can.
Copper Care Tips
Some of you have been asking how to care for your copper jewellery. Here are some suggestions for you:
▪ Something I just learned: Worcestershire sauce is a great copper cleaner! (Just don't use it on any pieces which have a coloured or aged finish, unless you want a shiny, new-copper-penny look.)
Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place. Copper tarnishes when exposed to air, so it’s a good idea to keep your copper in airtight zip lock plastic bags or an airtight container when not in use.
Remove when cleaning, swimming and taking a shower. Always remove your jewelry before using any product that contains bleach, ammonia, alcohol, fingernail polish removers that contain acetone, and turpentine. Some of these can cause a breakdown in the metal alloys leaving your jewelry beyond repair and dull or even pit the surface of your gemstones.
I enjoyed myself immensely at market this year, not only as a vendor, but as a shopper, too. There was such a variety of things on offer, from fresh local butter, to ethically raised grass-fed beef and lamb from Pasture Hill Farm, to delicious quiches from Jessica and Denise at The Orchard, fresh ground fair trade coffee, and, of course, locally grown produce. (I've been using local potatoes, leeks and garlic for my special Leek and Potato Soup with Cheese and Bacon. I was going to share my recipe with you, but then I realized that I don't actually have one. I just add some of this and a bit of that until it seems right. I paint that way, too.) The last market of the regular season is this Saturday, so you still have a chance to check out the offerings of our local producers and artisans, including Jen of Makobe River Soap Co/Vitality J. Her natural soaps look and smell good enough to eat. It will be a great opportunity to get a jump on your holiday shopping!
