Registration for the 2011 SoCal Leaders' Summit and Wilderness First Aid-MTB classes are both open.

Leaders' Summit will take place in Riverside the weekend of October 15-16. We are excited to announce that Lee McCormack, all around skills ninja, will be giving an updated version of the NICA skills class on the League pump track. Registration is open now and the weekend is quickly filling up with over 20 coaches already registered.

Our next WFA-MTB course is scheduled for the weekend of December 10-11 at Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta. Registration is open now.

If you plan on managing a club or being the primary training coach on the trail and have not attended a Leaders' Summit and WFA course; please put the dates on your calendar. We can't stress enough the importance of coaching your club with the NICA philosophy and best practices and the absolute best way to learn those is through our core coach training events.

On the off chance you are traveling or simply want a change of scenery; you may take your Leaders' Summit and/or WFA-MTB courses with any NICA league. Look for courses being offered in NorCal, Colorado, Washington, and Texas this year on the full NICA Calendar.

If you are thinking about starting a club (this year or in the future) or if you just want to round out your NICA knowledge we are again offering the webinar "How to Start and Manage a High School Mountain Bike Team" on October 11th. This includes those attending the Leaders' Summit for the first time this October. Registration is HERE.

If you missed the press-release earlier today we are thrilled to officially launch our CycleFest weekend on November 19-20. CycleFest is a gala event featuring great speakers, great food, and a great auction! CycleFest is one of the SoCal League's primary fund-raising events of the year and it always proves to be a powerfully inspiring event.

This year the weekend features a dinner at the Crevier Classic Car gallery in Costa Mesa on Saturday evening November 19th which features an interview and mingling with national champion and two time Olympian Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and his wife national champion Heather Irmiger. Additionally we will hear from two student-athletes, Pamela Bogust of Crescenta Valley HS and Joel Turner of Hemet HS, who are part of the first SoCal League class to have raced all four years of high school. We are also featuring a casual and supported Sunday morning road ride through the hills, coast, and islands surrounding Newport Beach.

Full information and tickets are available through the event website with early bird pricing through October 7th. This year we are offering a hosted bar (beer and wine) to those 21 and over with ticket purchase.

Please change out of your lycra and join us at the Saturday dinner, change into your lycra and join us on the Sunday ride, or join us for the whole weekend.

SoCal Coaches head out to ride the Mammoth Rock Trail. - Photo by Tom Lockhart

20 SoCal League coaches spent the weekend of September 9-11th riding and fellowshipping in the incredible environs of Mammoth Mountain at the first ever SoCal League Coaches Retreat. This first time event was open to SoCal League coaches with a year of experience under their belt and was a great opportunity to talk about shared experiences in the lead up to the 2012 season.

Thanks goes out to Rim of the World High coach and SoCal board member Jon Tanklage and Hart Composite coach and SoCal board member Paula Rogers for generously offering up lodging for the coaches.

With the fun that was had and the feedback we've received we're sure the Coach Retreat will become an annual event in SoCal. Look for the 2012 retreat to happen some time between mid-August and mid-September.

As many of you know, the registration period for teams and coaches is right around the corner. NICA expects to have club/coach registration for the online Pit Zone open close to October 11. We will be sending out a special email letting everyone know when the Pit Zone is open and any procedures you will need to know to register and get your team ready to go.

As a reminder, spring season NICA leagues cannot commence any "on bike" activities until they have registered, paid (which is how your club gets its insurance), and collected waivers for all of their club members. "Pre-season" runs from October 15th (or when your club is fully registered after October 15th) and runs through December 1st. After December 1st registered clubs may commence regular season practice. Pre-season activities must be approved through the League Director. For questions on appropriate pre-season events and procedures please download the "Training Limits" document under "Insurance" on the NICA Coach Resources page.

While you are on the Coach Resources page please take a look at the many tools available to you for managing your club. If you are a new team or still forming your team, an additional resource page is the "Team Starter Kit" page.

The SoCal League has a coach and staff only facebook group. Since it launched near the start of the 2011 season, coaches have been sharing ideas and information and the League has used the group to put timely information out to coaches. If you facebook, the group can be found HERE. Please feel free to use this group as a touchstone to share coaching ideas, coaching questions, and equipment and clothing exchanges.
