Windows Security - Prevention, Cure, Repair

ComputerCrash

In the old days, viruses were the most common infection on Windows PCs. So common that there are now more than a hundred antivirus utilities available. Most computers have one installed and the number of new viruses have dropped.

Trojans have taken the place of viruses. They can come in emails, links in emails, images, and most commonly from infected websites.

Malware is a close second to trojans. Malware can masquerade as a repair or prevention utility. Often a Trojan will scare you into downloading (and paying for) Malware. This is called ScareWare. Malware can also be inside an infected program.

As with most computer problems, PREVENTION is the smartest approach.

If you see signs of infection, disconnect from the internet, update and run a scan in your protection utilities. Take notes, save reports, take screenshots (MWSnap is good for screenshots), and remain calm.

Restarting in SAFE MODE can help the cleaning process. Tapping F8 key while booting should give you the option of starting in Safe Mode (non windows programs are not loaded).

If your protectiion utilities can not solve the problem, turn off the computer and seek advice. You do backups, don't you??
