SoCal at Sea Otter

Though I was not able to attend it was so awesome to read the constant stream of reports from the Sea Otter Classic last weekend. There's no doubt at all that the SoCal League in particular and high school mountain biking generally are having a huge impact on the world of cycling here in the United States.

For those who don't know, Sea Otter is an annual festival for all things "bike." It combines the "trade show" aspects of Interbike with many manufacturers debuting new products with racing of every type (road, XC mountain, downhill, dual slalom, pump track, cyclocross) and some great leisure rides as well. It takes place in and around the Laguna Seca / Carmel / Monterey area and covers a four day span. If you've never been, it's worth attending at least once.

I won't even try to point out all the results but suffice it to say SoCal had an impressive weekend with student-athletes, future student-athletes, alumni, coaches, parents, NICA Skills Guru Lee McCormack, and our fearless SoCal announcer Dorothy Wong having great showings in everything from cross-country to cyclocross to downhill to road racing. Aren't bikes grand?

See you in the Dirt Zone!

Power the Pinnacles

The SoCal series finals at Pinnacles are coming up quickly! On the weekend of May 5-6 the Lake Arrowhead playground will transition into a mountain biking playground!

As the League grows this will be the last time we can use the Pinnacles venue (well, possibly in the future when we have multiple mountain biking regions in the SoCal League) but we decided that the course was just too good to pass up for finals. This is a true roller coaster course. There isn't a flat area to be found as riders are always heading up or down and most likely smiling the whole time. Additionally, most of the course is wide enough for passing which is very rare to find.

The down side is that the venue is extremely tight for parking. We need everybody's patience and cooperation to get in and out in an orderly manner. Following are some notes on weekend logistics:

1) If you drive in and park "in" the venue you will ABSOLUTELY be blocked in until after the awards ceremony is finished. If you believe you will need to leave early you MUST park on the highway. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the venue layout by looking at the course map.

2) We are working on some shuttles to ease ingress from the highway but they are not confirmed yet.

3) Please try to carpool.

4) We will be presenting season overall individual and team awards in addition to race day awards.

5) As this is the League's 4th year this is the first time we have had a graduating class of riders who have raced ALL FOUR YEARS of high school. We want to take a photo of all of those riders during the podium ceremony.

6) We will take our traditional photo of all of our graduating seniors at the podium ceremony.

7) Thanks to some Rim High parents we have a coupon page that includes lodging and dining options.

8) We are always looking for volunteers to help us make the races as special as possible. Special needs are parking and course marshals. Please help us by signing up!

State Championships

California State Championships will take place on Sunday May 20 at the Stumpgrinder Dirt Club outside of Los Olivos/Solvang. This is a prestigious race which brings together the SoCal and NorCal Leagues once a year. The race does not count toward either race series but is a true, stand alone, state championship race where the winner in each field takes home a California Grizzly jersey.

The State Championship race requires individual riders to qualify in order to compete. To qualify for State Championships, a rider must finish within the top 80% of at least one SoCal or NorCal race this season. To determine if you or your rider qualify please look at this list of riders qualified as of Victory at Vail and/or do the following:

1) Determine the number of STARTERS in a field. For example, a field shows 27 finishers and 3 DNFs. The number to use is 30 (27+3).

2) Determine where you finished. For example, you finished 14th in the field noted above.

3) Divide the place you finished (14) by the number of starters (30) and get the result. (14/30=.466666...)

4) Truncate the result to the first two digits after the decimal (.46)

5) Convert that number to a percentage by moving the decimal point two spots to the right (46%).

6) Is this number less than 80%? If yes, you qualified for State Championships and may register. If not, you have not qualified yet and can not register.

7) Please contact before registering if you have any questions.

State Championships is PRE-REGISTRATION ONLY. There will be NO registration at the race and fields may fill. If you are not yet registered in the Pit Zone please contact Angel at to ensure you complete Pit Zone registration. Fields may fill so, if you are planning on attending, please register as soon as you know you are qualified.

The race flyer is up on the Race page. There will be inexpensive primitive (no hookups) camping on site. Come and enjoy the weekend with us! The venue is close to Solvang so even if you are staying on site you have quick access to the area!

SoCal Facebook Pages

The SoCal League has two official presences on facebook. We have left our facebook "group" and gone to a facebook "page" for general league information. Please "like" and share the official SoCal League page by clicking HERE.

We also have a group for our coaches and staff to interact. This is a closed "group" called the SoCal High School Cycling League Coach Zone. If you are currently a coach, a volunteer that is part of the ongoing management at races, or seriously considering launching a new club you can ask to join by clicking HERE.
